As we had 9 whole days in New York, we already decided before we left, that we would catch a bus and go to a nearby city for a couple of days. We decided on Washington DC, after all, it is the capital of USA, and the White house is something you should see if you are nearby.
We booked our bus tickets online, and on Monday morning we hopped on the bus. It was a comfortable 4 hour ride, and when we arrived at our hotel we were pleasantly surprised. It was an actual hotel, not some overpriced hostel room without mirrors (as in NY). After checking in, we spent the afternoon walking around, having dinner in Chinatown and checking out American Art Museum. Washington is a small city, it has the same population as Oslo, and is very small for a capital city. Especially in a country where everything is big! It was quiet after the chaos of New York. It was also very pretty, lots of nice buildings and statues everywhere.
Wednesday was our only full day there, and we decided to make the most out of it. The sun was shining, even though it was bitterly cold, and we walked around for most of the day. first we headed off to the White House. It was weird seeing it in real life, it is just one of those things you always hear about and see in movies. After that we walked to see the Lincoln meomorial, which is also where Martin Luther King had his famous "I have a dream" speech. The afternoon was spent in museums, which was interesting, but after several hours it just gets enough. If we'd had more time there, I definitely would have spent more time at the museums. Our last stop along the way was the Capitol, before we had Indian food for dinner and went back to our hotel, very tired!
Wednesday morning it was back again on the bus to New York. We feel like the little we saw of Washington was good. We'd heard bad things about it, for instance it wouldn't be safe, but we didn't feel unsafe. Maybe because by 8 pm we were so tired and almost ready for bed! Hehe..
3 days left in New York city now, sadly it is going to be raining a lot!
