On arrival in Hue we checked into the pinkest hotel we have ever seen. Bonus - it had a pool!!!!
Other travellers had told us the river trips to see Hue's main attraction (tombs) were not worth doing so we booked a motorcycle tour of the city instead. Our moped drivers spoke very little English but we quickly established a rapport of knowing nods and smiles. The traffic in Vietnam is truly chaotic but our drivers demonstrated their skills avoiding a moped driver carrying a massive birdcage, a pair of fighting dogs, a herd of cows and a cyclo loaded with so many polystyrene boxes that you could only see the drivers eyes peering out over the top!
The tour was excellent and we enjoyed zooming through villages and paddy fields at a top speed of about 20mph (not really zooming!) We saw an old Japanese covered bridge, the Forbidden City and the tombs of the emperors Tu Duc and Khai Dinh and a chinese pagoda overlooking the Perfume River. The highlights were watching monks chanting in their sanctuary and the stunning view of the Perfume River from Bunker Hill an old US stronghold from the Vietnam War. We also bumped into the Aussie couple (Wendyn and Alisa) we had met in Ho Chi Minh and Hoi An...they pop up everywhere!
We realised that we had pretty much covered all of the city in one day so booked a bus to Hanoi the following day.
