With our new group we headed off to a hotel on an island in Rio Dulce. En route we stopped to have lunch at a Mayan site featuring carved totem poles. In the Visitors Centre we were able to discover our Mayan horoscopes. Kim was a rabbit and `the guradian of fertility`, apparently she would have made an excellent gynacologist and is generally weak and sickly. Mark was a conch shell and while he is decisive he can also be cutting and unpleasant. Needless to say we both decided Mayan horoscopes are a load of rubbish!
Our first night with our new group was spent on a tiny island hotel in Rio Dolce. The owner of the hotel is a little strange and to get drinks you have to buy `Kevins`, a fake US dollar bill with a picture of the owner Kevin on it and the motto `in Kevin we trust` Oh dear.... what a power trip old Kevin is on!!!!
Leaving Kevinland we headed to Flores and spent a night on an island overlooking Lake Petzen Itza before driving to the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, impressive ruins dating from 800BC rising out of exotic Guatemalan jungle. As well as climbing the ruins we saw a range of wildlife including cute furry Coatis, overgrown guinea pig things called Agoutis, spider monkeys and toucans. Mark braved steep ladders to climb up the tallest temple but Kim decided that was too much like hard work and lazed in the shade instead!
