Early rise and we join a bicycling tour; what a great way to see the city! Through markets, small alleys (and peoples kitchens and terraces), schools, temples, residential areas, gardens - legs of the tour by long tail boat riding through the canals, or klongs,of Bangkok - lunch at a small kitchen next to the klong - marvelous food! We get up while birds and crickets are still sleeping to get to the magnificent Angkor Wat temple area before dawn. It is a must to catch the beautiful lights at sunrise. The place is heaving with tourists (not very explordinary), but totally worth seeing! The area is massive so you can easily spend a day here - have a tuk-tuk take you around. The next morning we visit Samraong, about two hours bumpy drive from Siem Reap. We travel straight to the medical project at the local hospital - which covers a population of about 150 000 inhabitants in the area. The conditions are very poor and simple, not only comparing to our own western standard. We leave early for a full day in the car - travelling from a good 12 hours from Phitsanulok to Siem Reap. We go out in the evening - the western style, backpacker centre of town is busteling - a change from where we have been the last few days - but the pizza tastes shamefully good after rice, rice and rice thus far.
