We flew Thai Airways who were a fab company to fly with. The plane was quite empty so we were chancer yet again and claimed the extra leg room seats (with a row to ourselves AGAIN!).
Once we arrived into Bangkok and collected our things we headed to find the bus to Trat where we caught the ferry to Koh Chang - via Boots ofcourse to purchase some beauty products from home. Our bus was leaving at 10.20, we bought our tickets and had to get on the shuttle bus to where our us was departing from - accompanied by the lady on the ticket desk bless her, she was worried we wouldnt find it!! We got on the bus and were quite surprised at how comfortable it was. To our surprise there was a few empty rows right atthe back of the bus so we had 2 seats each. Later when the toilet which was located behind us starting to totally pong we soon realised why everyone was sat at the front. Luckily the bus only took 4 and a half hours instead of the 5 and a half which we had originally been advised. We got off the bus and were transported to the ferry, oh dear lord if you had seen this thing. My camera was dead so no pics but rust bucket was far too generous. We could see Koh Chang but didnt seem to be getting any closer. 45 minutes later we finally arrived. It was roasting hot although the clouds were grey and it looked as if it was going to rain (it follows us wherever we go). The taxis in Koh Chang are mad. They are literally like little yutes with two rows of seats in the back facing sideways towards each other. 13 of us were crammed on and our luggage thrown on the roof. Luckily the resort we had decided to head to first (White Sand Beach) was the first stop and only about 15 minutes from the ferry port. We went into the first decent hotel we seen had a look and negotiated a price, duped our things and went out to have a look around. Its such a chilled, quiet place and even more so with it being low season. The streets are really quiet. Most activity takes place along the beach front with the hotels and bars all having tables and chairs set out there with nice lights and candles - great for mosquitos too as we found out the first night.
We headed to the front to the hotel restaurant and were bitten alive. We thought it was too good to be true that they had stayed away from us so far. We decided to leave before we were covered in bites so headed to the shop and bought some local beers to sample on the balcony.
We woke up the following morning to the sound of rain and were mortified when we looked out the window; the roads were flooded. We didnt have much hope for the rest of the day. We headed for brekkie, Danni with her rain mac - her Mum and Ian were very organised and clued up buying her this!! I took the umbrella which was provided!!
To our surprise it started to clear up. We decided to see some of the island so paid four pound each to hire a moped and set out to see the west coast of the island. It was fab, felt so free just stopping where we wanted to have a wee nosey. We stopped at lots of different beaches and visited one of the famous Klong Plu waterfalls. We had a mighty trek to get to it which we werent aware of at the time. My one pound Primark special Flip Flops did my proud! Once we reached the waterfall it had all been worth it as it was a beautiful sight. The water looked fab so would have been daft not to get in there. We had a swim and took some pics then got on our way passing different resorts and residential villages stopping when we seen something that caught our eye. On the way home we found ourselves being pulled over by the police and fined for not wearing a helmet lol, 4 pound! We felt like proper criminals.
We arrived back just before sunset and decided to sit on White Sand Beach where we were staying and watch the sun go down, it was amazing.
After dinner we decided to treat ourself to a massge. I had some Reflexology and a Thai body massage and Danni had her nails done and a foot massage. We didnt leave the salon until midnight. By the time we left resort was in darkness and totally dead.
Today the sun was shining when we woke up which put a smile on our faces. It was a toasting day so we were in and out of the sun and constantly in the pool cooling down. We found another place to stay which was 4 pound cheaper a night than the one we had been staying in (10 pound down to 6 pound each woow) so moved our things and have just had a nice tea on the beach again. I have booked a boat trip which visits 4 different Islands for tomorrow and Danni's having a nice chilled day at the pool. We are staying here another few nights before getting the bus and then ferry over to Koh Samet. Having a fab time. :-)
What a fab day I had on the island tour. Although it rained on and off throughout the day it was such a great day. I set off at 8 and wasnt back until around 6.30. We visited 4 different islands south of Koh Chang (Koh Rang, Koh Yak Lek, Koh Wai and Koh Thong Lang) and had the chance to snorkel. The water was so clear and the coral and fish were amazing, lots of amazing colours. Was so much nicer than what we seen when we snorkelled in Bali, gutted I used all of my underwater camera pics. I met lots of lovely people and the guides on the boat were fantastic. Was a well needed chill out day. I got chatting to a Dutch girl called Stephanie and invited her out with me and Danni later on. Danni had had a nice chilled day at the pool/beach between the rain.
Later we met Stephanie and had dinner on the beach then went to the Reggae bar to watch the fire show. Through the night there was a thunderstorm like you wouldnt believe, neither of us had ever heard anything like it. We prayed it would clear up and be a beautiful sunny day for our last day in Koh Chang.
Our prayers didnt really work as we spent most of the day cloud bathing, although it was a nice chilled out day. Koh Chang is mad there are so many old men with young Thai women (many of them stunning) and me and Danni spend most of our time laughing at them and proper boking over them getting up close and personal, eeee its proper minging!! Later on we decided to have a few drinks so took it in turn going to the shop to get the drinks in. Everyone must have thought we were mad as we were still laid on the sunbeds hours after the sun had gone down but we were having a right old laugh. I was in my element that I had found Smirnoff Ice and Vodka Mule so no more beer, although still craving a nice vino! We finally found the energy to head to the room to get changed. We jumped in a taxi to another part of the resort where we had seen there was an Irish bar, although to my disappointment there was no hot Irish men or Irish music but we had a game of pool and a wee drink. We passed through an area called little Pattaya. Pattaya is a tacky resort in Thailand where there are lots of women selling themselves and lady boys and this was a mini version. It was a right laugh. We met a guy from the UK who filled us in on Thai law and the bother he had found himself in, he was a proper Delboy!
I was looking forward to having a massage all day so headed back to the wee salon we had been too before for an Oil Massage in the hope I would be mega chilled for bed. NOPE! We had left the guy with reception and the reception was closed and security advised us we could not get it. Danni finally got it although with no key we had no electricity or air con. Lets just say we had a hot hot night. Although on a positive note we didnt have to pay for that night, bonus!
We got a taxi about 9.30 this morning to the pier to catch the ferry to the mainland for our bus to Trat for our ferry over to Koh Samet. What a long day. Me being mega sea sick wasnt liking the boat over to the mainland at all. It was a total relief when the boat finally stopped. We the had a 3 hour journey to the pier. We named our driver Mr Happy, for obvious reasons. To say he was MISERABLE is being generous! He felt the need to transport what seemed like half of his family on this wee minibus!
We were glad to finally get off the bus but little did we know what was to come next. We were directed to our boat, which at the time was being filled with boxes of different foods and toilet seats and basins! There was lots of Thai people already on board and was already pretty cramped. We were onboard a further 30 minutes and the items and people grew and grew. Finally we left. The rain was pouring down and the boat struggling to get through the water, we were getting soaked. At one point some of the boxes fell off the boat and one of the crew and had to fish the out of the water. A little girl decided to be sick, which made us feel so much better when we were already holding on for our lives and feeling a bit worse for wear. We were overjoyed when we finally reached the Island of Koh Samet. What an adventure though, oh and such a thought that we have to do it again in a few days time, yehhhh :-)
Koh Chang was a fab place. Will defo be back :-)
