I havent written for a week now, because of 2 reasons. The first, is that I am now travelling through the Thai Islands, which breeds inherent laziness into anyone who comes here. The second, is that I genuinely miss the adventure of south east asia that I had in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. I mean, when you walk through some Cambodian towns, you are chased after and waved at by the kids, and stared at if you eat at a street stall with the locals. Over here, you are a local, and especially in Koh Samui, I felt like I was 17 and back on another lads holiday. But dont get me wrong, I LOVE lads holidays.
I landed in Samui and got to my hostel which I booked blindly online as it was only 13 quid a night. I would have paid 130 had I known. I had a beautiful one bed bungalow on the beach, I could literally throw my empty cans in to the sea, (not that I did of course). So that night I ventured out to the legendary Green Mango area of Chaweng. Its madness defined after about 12pm, the place is electric, full of westerners, and really easy to meet people so I had a cracking night. The next day I found out that Gary O'Conner who I worked with at Murphys, and his mate Pat where in Samui also, so we met the next day, where else but...Tropical Murphys Irish bar.
The legendary full moon party was then actually delayed for 2 days put back from the Friday to the Sunday due to elections- can u believe it? Do you think they would cancel Monday Night Madness in Watford if Brown took us to the polls- ha, I think not. Anyway, Gary, Pat and I just passed a few lazy days (and slightly livelier nights (;-) in Samui, which is not hard to do, but we managed to include a game of "Football-Golf"...exactly what it says on the tin by the way...you kick a football around a golf course into oversized holes. It was brilliant actually, but I would love to see the alternative creation "Golf-Football" in action, 22 men with golf clubs trying to smash a golf ball into the net. Perhaps unlikely!!
Then came Sunday, the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan which is a complete raw slice of fresh madness for 12 hours on a beach. Night until morning, raving, drinking, dancing, singing Leeds songs watching the carling cup final with 3 other lads and getting run out of the bar, sleeping, waking up, raving more, rounded off with a delightfully choppy boat back to Samui at 7am. Brilliant. And we all survived with wallets, money, and limbs intact. Unforgettable to say the least.
The next day I headed to Koh Tao, Gary and Pat needed a days rest before the trip, but I soldiered on. Henno's brother has businesses on Koh Tao, and I got in contact with one of his partners when I arrived, through Dave, and met this lad Greg when I got off the boat. I only wanted a bit of advice about where to stay and a friendly face, but, being a legend, Greg offered me a room for the night above his club complete with TV air-con and dvds, and also took the time to give me a complete tour of the island on his motorbike before stopping for a beer. What an absolute gentleman. He also gave me advice on where to do my diving which I started today. So, I am now in this diving resort just off the main beach, with Gary and Pat also, and Pat is doing the diving with me while Gary relaxes and gets progressively redder. You cant keep a good Paddy down.
Heading off down the beach now to hand out some flyers for Greg and his club night on thursday which promises to be good, just as a thankyou for the help he gave me on monday. Flyering is of course, an excellent excuse to meet....erm...people lol ;-)
