The house where we are staying is in the valley between two volcanoes, Rincon de la Vieja and Miravalles. The place is like a wind tunnel and at night the doors and windows rattle and it is also so dark that we take a torch to bed to find the bathroom and light switches.
We drove up to the other sector of the national park open to the public - Sector Las Pailas. By using a toll road on the land of Hacienda Guachepelin we managed to avoid an eighty kilometre detour. It cost 700 Colones (50p) per person.
The Las Pailas sector is more visited than the sector Sanata Maria. It's an easy walk, partially disabled access, through woodland and scrub where you can see mud pots, bubbling lagoons, fumaroles, steaming earth - awesome.
Joan has a moble that works in Costa Rica and messed around with Facebook live. It's amazing how you can be thousands of miles away and peeps at home can simultaneously see what you're doing.
It was an amazing day. It took longer than we expected, so we ditched ideas about visiting the Hot Springs at Rio Negro and opted for the jacuzzi where we are staying. Sadly, it turned out to be cool so we amused ourselves, watching the light fade my dangling our legs in the water with a sneaky beer.
After an early dinner, we sat up late reading novels - quite a treat!
