Hello people, hope all is well at home.
As you know we booked a trip to Fraser Island. There's only a 3 places that you can leave from to get to the Island, we left from Rainbow beach which is about 2 hours away from Noosa. On the way to Rainbow beach we stopped off at a nearby fishing town called Tin Can Bay. For anyone who visits Australia we advise that you go here! We got to hand feed wild Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins for free!!!!! All they ask for is an optional small donation. These dolphins are very rare and their pod size only consists of approximately 10 dolphins (Bottlenose dolphin pods can be up to 100+) The 2 dolphins that we got feed were called Patch and Mystique, they are 2 of only 50 that live in the Northern teritory. The story behind them coming here was that in the 50's 1 dolphin got injured by a fishing boat and was unable to hunt for fish himself. The fisherman got on to some expert advice and they told them how to nurse the dolphin back to full health. Since then through the generations this pod has visited the bay on a regular basis. The staff only feed them 1/3 of there daily intake so that they still learn to hunt in the wild, because of this they don't come into the bay everyday. We were very lucky and fortunate as 2 came in when we were there.
The next day we had Fraser Island to look forward to, which is the worlds biggest sand island. In the words of Kylie WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW!! What an experience. The trip began on the southern side of the Island and we first visited Lake Wabby, you have to walk over a large sand dune to get here. With the heat it really does feel like your in the desert. When we got there we saw a beautiful lake, surrounded by loads of trees which made the water look green, but is actually clear and so fresh that you able to drink it which we both did. From here we went to Eli Creek, stopping off at the Pinaccles to see all the different coloured sands on the way. Eli Creek is a slow down hill stream that we floated down on a body board, it was great fun! In the afternoon we travelled further along the 75 mile beach to Indian Head which is on the Northern side of the Island. You have to climb a hill which leads to the cliff edge and sharks are often seen here, unfortunatley we didn't see any. We managed to see a manter ray though. The views from here were exceptional. On the way back from here we stopped off at the Maheno ship wreck, it was like being in Pirates of the Carribean. This was the last stop for the first day of our tour and we headed back to our beach resort for the night where we went out with the rest of the people on our bus.
On the second day on the Island we headed inland to the rainforest, we learnt so much about the history of the island and all its surroundings. Our tour guide sent the group on a treck through the forrest. About half way through the walk we were amazed that we saw 4 wild dingoes (Everything on this Island is in its natural habitiat, nothing is in captivity in these areas) Everyone cameras came out in excitement - at first, however this soon changed when we was confronted by the one of the pack of 4. Me and a few of the other lads put a front on to intimidate the dingo as we read that this is what your suppose to do if you come in contact with them. Clare offically cacked her pants! she was so scared that she soaked her clothes with tears. Looking back now we both find it funny, especially the fact that when we put on the front, one dingo scurried away really quickly not seeing another dingo behind him, he suddenly found himself crashing into him sending the other dingo flying down the embankment into the stream. We so wish that we got it on video. After all this excitement we headed to Lake Mackenzie, this was definatly the most beautiful place of the trip and is a naturally formed fresh water lake. Words can not discribe this place so check the photos and see for yourself! There are so many more stories to tell, but we'll save them for when we get home.
Hope your well, speak to you soon.
Lots of love Kevin and Clare
