We had managed to change the date we sailed back home, from the 29th to the 28th and were keen to get home as soon as we could. We left Margaret's place early in the afternoon and braved the traffic to get to Port Melbourne. Kent was a bit stressed as we went over the West Gate Bridge, because of the multiple lanes of traffic but also the cross wind that was buffeting the bus. But we managed to navigate our way with no problems, aided by the trusty Garmin (we nicknamed Gretel). We were very excited to board the Spirit of Tasmania II later on that evening, and had a relatively smooth sailing. And of course it was much more enjoyable without a sick child, like Callen had been when we started our adventure 7 weeks earlier. The boat docked in Devonport on time, and we arrived home safe in our driveway just after 8am on Wednesday, 29th August.
We have had a fantastic trip, a once in a lifetime adventure complete with the ups and downs that travel brings. And although we have decided that we won't repeat the experience in a hurry, we really enjoyed our 2012 Big Island Road Trip.
