Broken Hill - 2 weeks on the road.
We decided to stay 2 nights in Broken Hill, because of our Willcania fly through and because there is heaps to see here! It's hard to believe this time 2 weeks ago we were getting on the boat to start our journey. We have seen and done so much, and there is still a lot more time to go! When we first arrived in Broken Hill, we drove around and had a look through town, got some petrol (it appears as though our engine trouble with the fuel pick up has been fixed, yay!) and found a caravan park. In the morning, Kent went to the School of the Air where he spent a couple of hours talking with staff and they gave him lots of presents! In the meantime, Bec and Callen walked into town (in the freezing cold and misty rain!) for a look about and saw a few of the historical buildings. We met back up later and went to a mineral and mining museum which had awesome specimens of the unique Broken Hill minerals. After that, we went to the Silver City Mint and the people there were lovely. We looked through all their exhibits and bought some gifts (and some fudge from the chocolate shop!), and then they gave Callen a toy galah and let us walk through The Big Picture gallery for free!!! So we got lots of freebies today!
We then went for another drive, to the lookout at the top of the mullock pile and didn't get any service in the fancy cafe/restaurant. So walked out and sat on the big park bench instead! Then had a yummy milkshake at Bells Cafe - something on the "must do's" for Broken Hill. It was a bit like the 50s Diner in Deloraine with all the old memorabilia. And I think that was everything...a very full day of sight-seeing!!!
The next morning we went out to Silverton for some more fossicking and found some citrine which was pretty cool. We also looked around the little town and visited the pub which has lots of information about movies that have been filmed there...Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert are just 2 of many! But it is a nice little town, albeit very dry and isolated with typical "outback" scenery. We then headed back to Broken Hill to get fuel and lunch before getting back on the road again...next stop - South Australia!!!
