After finishing the little bit of packing we had left, and bringing our suitcases to Christine's mom's room to store, we headed down to the executive lounge for a quick breakfast. We checked out, and set off for the Dongdaemun Market. This is a huge market with many several story department stores, as well as countless outdoor markets. We decided to go to the Doosan Tower (10 floors), as it was considered the best department store for reasonably priced fashions.
Each floor was themed, making it easy to find specific things you might be looking for. We started down in B2, which was the sportswear and outdoors section. There seemed to be many brand names and prices were a little higher than Christine had hoped for, but we decided to check out all the other floors and see what we could find.
Next was B1, which was the Young Casualwear floor. Before we explored that floor, we saw that off to the side of the mall was an underground area (connecting the mall to the subway) that was filled with lots of smaller booths, almost like a flea market. We browsed through these booths, and after many shoe stores and many pairs tried on, Christine found a pair she liked, for a price she was willing to pay!
We headed back to B1 and spent some time wandering around that area. It wasn't very easy to make sure that hit all the stores, but we think we did pretty well. Christine found a store with a bunch of shoes on clearance and was happy to see two pairs that she liked for about $15 each.
Level 1 was the Designer Area, and it didn't take us too long to go through this floor. The prices were very high, and not what we were looking for. Level 2 was the Young Career section, but it didn't turn out to be what we had thought it would be from the description. It seemed more like the trendy area. Christine found a nice shirt in one of the stores and added it to her haul.
Level 3 was the shoes, bags, and purses. Kent decided to just have a seat on one of the comfy couches and wait for Christine to finish her browsing. Christine did find a nice leather purse that she liked, but decided to think about it and come back after we had done the other levels. We headed up to Level 4, which was Menswear. It didn't take too long to walk through this section. The type of clothes that are popular for men in Korea are not things that Kent would really see himself wearing. Christine did make a half-hearted attempt to get Kent to buy some skinny jeans, but it was to no avail.
We decided to go and have some lunch before continuing, so we headed up to the food court on Level 7. A nice meal of Bibimbap filled us up and we figured that would be enough to keep us going until we got to the airport. We went back down to Level 5, which is the accessories area. It was a very sparkly floor, with tons of bling on every counter. Christine found some interesting nail polish in one of the cosmetics stores, so she bought that.
Our time was basically up at this point, so we headed back down and decided to wander the outside shops a little bit as we made our way back to the hotel. It was raining on and off, but most of the shops had awnings up so that made it a little better. We passed through the book district, the fabric district, and the outdoor/adventure/sporting goods district, before Christine saw a cool belt that she liked, so she popped into the store to buy it.
We flagged down a passing cab, and headed back to the hotel to pick up our baggage and head to the airport for the flight home. We had arranged for the same taxi driver who had brought us to the hotel from the airport on our way in to bring us back today. We got checked in and headed up to the lounge to get some food and wait for our flight to board.
Our flight got off without a hitch, but we were a little concerned when they paged for any medical personal on board due to a medical emergency. It must have not been a very big emergency, as we never heard anything else about it after that.
Soon after taking off, we were served a dinner of bibimbap. It was very tasty, but Christine got an unpleasant surprise when she took of a big bite of one of the side dishes and it turned out to be jalapeno peppers. After dinner, we decided to sleep until 4 am (Korea time), so we would be able to get to sleep when we got home at 11 pm (Toronto time) to avoid jet lag. There is a 13 hour time difference, so when we got home our bodies would feel like it was 10 am.
We woke up at 4:30 am and we both watched 2 movies to help pass the time. Two hours before landing, we were served our omelet breakfast. Christine didn't think it was as good as the breakfast we had had on the flight to Korea.
After a very gentle landing, and gathering our luggage, we were happy to climb into the taxi to go home. A quick stop at Christine's mom's house to pick up our car brought us to the final destination before getting home to our critters. We were greeted at home by both cats (a surprise, as Tigger usually gives us the cold shoulder for a while when we return from being away). We are looking forward to sleeping in our own bed tonight and picking up the kittens from Amber's tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone who joined us on our trip, by taking the time to read our blog!
