Kennington to Cape Town
CELEBRATIONS AT VICTORIA FALLS
Our arrival at Victoria Falls marked several events: our 200th day on the road, 20,000 miles from home, our 28th country and Camilla's 30th Birthday. So it was time to celebrate...
We started by visiting the Victoria Falls late in the evening to see a very rare site - a lunar rainbow which appears only when there is a full moon and a clear sky. There are only two places in the world to see such a "moonbow" (the other in Kentucky, US) and the conditions have to be just right. It was incredible to see the lunar rainbow appear as the moon rose above the thunderous waterfalls. The waterfalls are known as 'the smoke that thunders' by local tribesmen and it easy to see why. This was a great way to view Victoria Falls for the first time.
We rose early on the 16th March to celebrate Camilla's 30th birthday, starting with a thirty minute flight in a microlite over the spectacular falls. It was an incredible, if rather precarious feeling to fly right over the world's largest waterfall, getting soaked by the spray in the process. She even packed her 'Biggles' flying goggles for the experience!
We spent the day in the park taking photos of Victoria Falls. Camilla danced around in her bikini getting soaked in the spray - more like a 3 year old than a thirty year old. It was her birthday after all! After drying off we donned our glad rags (never pack a bag without a little black dress...even if you are driving across Africa in a Land Rover!) and spent the evening drinking Gin Martinis at the very smart Livingstone Hotel whilst watching the sun set over the 'Smoke that Thunders'. It was a very special, memorable day.
From here we are heading into northern Botswana, to view the Chobe National Park and the western pan handle of the Okavango Delta. We had hoped to visit the Makgadikgadi salt pans and drive south to Maun but unfortunately, due to the very heavy rains, the roads are impassable and much of the area flooded. We feel we have had our "flooding" experience in South Luangwa so will head west to Namibia for some drier desert conditions.
So it's Chocks Away from us both, and Biggles, at Victoria Falls...
