Kennington to Cape Town
Next up was the Serengetti...Africa's largest game park. We had to cross the park to reach Moshi but wanted to try to do it in the shortest possible timescale - due to the fact that it costs $170 per 24 hours for two people in a foreign registered car! Quite frankly this is a rip off compared to other parks - the roads are terrible, the camping facilities ($20 each) grotty with no facilities and the signposting non existent. We did, however, manage to see lots of lions including one pride of twenty females to one big fat male! Having entered at 2pm and done a game drive in the evening and early morning, it was still a mad rush to make it out of the northern gate by 2pm the next day...in fact we did it with only ten minutes to spare...a close call which could havee cost us another whacking $170!
From the Northern gate we had a beautiful day's drive to the shores of Lake Natron on the border with Kenya. The lake is surrounded by volcanoes including the ever brooding and bubbling Olinyo Lengai. We camped in a field belonging to a Masai warrior, next to a boma (village). We were woken at dawn by the villagers coming to collect their water. Under the misty volcano, dressed in their bright red blankets and bedecked with beads it was an evocative sight - one worth getting up for to take a few piccies...
From Lake Natron we drove east to Arusha, where we got the car cleaned inside and out (dust has been the bain of our lives on this trip). We were also able to make some minor repairs and routine checks to Biggles at The Wilderness Trails workshop. Biggles now looks and feels as good as new - something we were about to feel a few showers later.
WE MADE IT TO MOSHI!
We have now arrived in Moshi, a colourful town in northern Tanzania dominated by the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro. We are so excited to have arrived in Moshi as it is here that we will be visiting the kids at the Amani Children's Home. We have driven over 14,000 miles from Kennington to visit the children in Moshi and we are thrilled to have arrived safely and in one piece.
We look forward to spending the next week with the Amani children, all of whom were abandoned to roam the streets, and seeing how the money we have raised is helping them build a better future. Thank you once again to all those who have helped us raise over three thousand pounds for this worthwhile charity. We look forward to thanking you personally over the coming months.
Until our next update...tara for now. R&C
