Kennington to Cape Town
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
We have found an interesting aspect of Malawian culture to be people's names. We have met 'Happy Coconut' (who looked a bit miserable), 'Brown Bread' (who was albino), 'Starter Motor' (who knew nothing about cars), 'Innocent (who incidentally stole our washing line!), 'Ariston' (named after his parents' fridge), Gift (working for the Malawi Revenue Authority) and 'Trouble' (who we decided to stay clear of!). You would be forgiven to think that these are nick-names, funny anecdotes that they inherited from the school yard, but no - it is their real names placed on their birth certificates and identity documents.
The shops were also in on the act of bizarre naming. We passed the 'Heaven Bound Funeral Parlour', 'Killer Car Repairs', 'No Charge Battery Specialist', 'Sober Beer Bar', 'Blind Corner Road Signs' and the 'Butchery and Night Club'. One of the best was the 'Internet Café' - with a conspicuous absence of any computers or internet access but the owner of the bar saw many western people visiting a bar called this in Tanzania and he liked the name!
