Kennington to Cape Town
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DR. LIVINGSTONE
Never ones to heed too much attention towards signs in Africa we were bemused to see the sign 'Road closed' on a steep, single lane path up an escarpment to the famous town of Livingstonia. As it was the only road up we were keen to give it a go. We drove past a barrier with a policeman waving frantically at us and bumped along the steep track thinking "Biggles can cope with anything". Even when workmen told us we couldn't proceed, placing rubble and cement mixers in our way (until we gave them a cigarette!), we were still not put off. We were, after all, following in the footsteps of Dr Livingstone, who didn't have a 4x4 and must have experienced more obstacles than we were facing now. With just 600 metres to go from the top our Livingstonian adventure was cut short - an abandoned tractor blocked the entire single lane track and our only option was to go back down. It had been worth it for the adventure and the view...we doubt Dr. Livingstone had to deal with broken down tractors in his march up Africa.
