So yesterday I spent an hour writing about our 3rd day in san fran and just as I was about to post it, the web page refreshed and I lost it all! So that teaches me to make sure I keep saving as I go. Grrr! It was a really good one too! I'm not re-writing it but for my mum's sake and my memories sake, I shall list the activities that took place...!
- woke up early but lazed around
- got up and ready at about 11.30
- walked 10 blocks to catch bus x8
- bought a foot long sub on the way and ate 1/2 for lunch then saved the other 1/2 for dinner (resourceful ;) )
- stopped at Walgreens to get dry shampoo and pizza flavoured Pringles
- got the bus to pier 39
- hired a bike from 'Blazing Saddles' (after much convincing we got a tandem :D)
- rode along the pier, got lost, got laughed at by locals
- 40 min ride uphill then stopped at a big 'L' shaped pier with amazing views of bridge, took photos, ate snack, continued up hill to bridge
- so cold and windy!
- rode along bridge, very busy, hard to manoeuvre tandem through crowd
- decided not to ride in to Sausalito and get ferry back, rode back
- Sat on beach and ate dinner
- returned bikes and walked to Lombard Street (crookedest street in world)
- hard work! Walked up a hill longer than stock hill and much steeper than Polesteeple - I didn't moan about it too much!
- amazing sight! Walked down and took photos, watched little cars and bikes coming down
- cafe in happy hour at the bottom, drank beer and mimosas :D
- walked to bus stop, 30 min wait so walked the 17 blocks instead
- 7.30pm but both knackered after that day so we went to the supermarket next door and bought coronas and crisps and watched tv
- asleep by 9!!
I'm not so sure about it here. George has loved it and I've enjoyed everything we have done but the abundance of hobos makes me feel uneasy and its just not a very clean or pretty city. I'm not really in a rush to return and I'm quite pleased to be moving on today. We spoke to Andy yesterday morning and he tells us that the surrounding cities paid for all their homeless people to get the bus to San Francisco and stay there! No exaggeration, George and I guess about 1 in every 10 people is a hobo.
Ok so day 4 was our last full day in San Francisco and by far my favourite. We woke up early (shock) and I spent an hour writing our blog, which annoyingly got deleted. I moaned about that for a while then George made me go and have a shower (Rach, I was not happy about this! Especially now I had my dry shampoo!). We went through the same routine of George playing his game boy outside the shower door as the lock had still not been fixed. Once we were both ready (and smelling fresh :) ) we walked downtown to market street to catch the 71 to golden gate park. Here gathered the biggest group of hobos we'd seen yet. One told George to F*** off just for looking at him (which I told him not to btw!) and another woman told him to get his nipple pierced then go and see her! I think I probs could've pimped him out for some extra cash!
We got the bus to a tourist spot called Haight Ashbury which is also known as the hippie district (Rob you would've loved it, it was like Amsterdam on steroids). There were lots of little cafes and shops and buskers with long dreadlocks. We didn't spend too long here as we were eager to find a WiFi spot so we could Skype some friends and family. We spotted a Maccy D 's so thought we'd kill two birds with one stone and get lunch too (as you can tell, we've been really health conscious in San Fran!). We got our food and logged in to the free WiFi then got to see some FAMILIAR faces. Although once again the hobos showed up n started eyeing up the kindle so we had to cut the Skype dates short and we headed to the park.
It turns out that while I was sorting out the Skype, George had gone to buy more food and had made friends with a hippie so on our way through the entrance of the park we were greated with calls of 'that guys awesome, he's English'. There was a big group of people all sitting around a tree. Some were asleep, others were smoking and one guy was playing with some kind of long pole! Bazaar! George looked as though he was about to join in so I grabbed his hand and steered him away!
The park is bigger than central park in New York at 1,017 acres and once we'd got further in, was actually quite pretty. We walked passed a baseball park and a children's playground then we went to find a place called The Californian Academy of Sciences which I'd seen on trip advisor n looked pretty fun. When we got there we found out that it cost $34 + tax each and that's out of budget so we decided to give it a miss which was a shame but this is what we signed up for! I'd also heard about a Japanese tea garden within the park so we decided to go there instead.
It was beautiful. We took lots of photos then sat for ages and drank Jasmine tea by a waterfall. We both felt very tranquil and calm. I could've sat there all day. After a while we decided to head towards Stow lake which is in the centre of the park and they have row boats and pedalos which we thought might be fun! As we walked we spotted two little terrapins basking in the sun who George decided to make friends with. I managed to prise him away and we continued walking along the lake. By the time we got to the boat hire, we were both knackered so decided to give our legs a rest and just had a little sit by the lake instead then we headed back to the bus stop. We got the 71 back but went on to a different stop in order to avoid the gathering of hobos. I needed a nap (this not working stuff is hard work), so we went back to the room. As it was our last night in San Fran, we decided to get dressed up (kind of) and go out for dinner.
We went to The Cheesecake Factory at the top of Macy's in union square. It was really busy and we had to wait an hour for a table but oh my God it was so worth it! We sat by the bar and had a few drinks while we waited then we were taken to our seats on the balcony. The view was amazing and they had patio heaters. I was in my element! We had pizza, burgers and prosecco then we finished it off with the most amazing cheesecake I have ever eaten! It was called the Oreo Dream and it was HUGE! Dinner wasn't hugely expensive considering the location and the view and it only broke the bank at $50 dollars. If you ever go to San Fran, you have to go there.
All in all a really lovely day. Today we check out of our hotel at 11 and pick up our hire car. Who knows where we'll stay tonight! The plan is to drive to Yosemite but we're relying solely on my map reading skills. This could be interesting...
