Woke early this morning to go on a microflight over Victoria Falls. Got to the Zim border and stamped out for 7am and waited for my transfer. At 7.30am an immigration official came out with his mobile and my tour operator on the line to inform me that the run way was flooded and that there would be no microflights today. As it was our last day in Vic Falls and I had already been stamped out of Zim, Tegan and I decided to go to Zambia for the morning anyway. Headed across the bridge and paid 20USD to enter Zambia for the day. Then had to pay 20USD to go into the falls - but we hadn't been up close and personal yet, so these are the costs you have to pay as a tourist at times. As we were there so early we also had the bonus of basically being the only ones in the Falls. We donned our rain jackets, put our bags and camera's under our jackets (nice pregnant look) and hit the knife edge bridge. Took some video footage of the falls as you can't explain the sound of them and how the mist moves so quickly, one moment you can see the falls, the next it is just totally white. You can also be standing on a point and it is raining 10cm in front of you and 10cm behind you, but not exactly where you are, then the wind changes and you are drenched. We spent about 4 hours at the falls and loved every moment. We then decided that it was time for lunch and headed back to Vic Falls town on the Zim side. The Zambian side has the falls and a market, but town is a taxi ride away with nothing really to see, so we headed back to a café we knew had free wifi and good food. Got to skype mum and dad again (they are getting a bit spoilt with contact at present) and plan our afternoon. We then spent some time in the markets before heading to the Victoria Falls Hotel which is at the end of the gorge where you bungee. There was a Cape Town to Cairo sign that we discovered we have come 5165miles from Cairo so far. Truth be told we have come further as we have not come as the crow flies, but it really put some perspective on our trip. Some funny shots later we were on the terrace for a tea and coffee, one look at the menu and we decided that sharing a chocolate brownie with ice-cream and cocktails were much more to our taste and we had finally injected some much needed class back into our travels. The hotel is at least 4 stars and oh so posh and lovely. I was tempted to drink my cocktail in the loo they were so damn nice. Michael and Julie turned up and joined us, they had high tea, we had another cocktail and then they decided that our cocktails looked so good we should all have another. At that point we decided that we best head back to camp for dinner and come back down to earth before we bankrupted ourselves on cocktails and had to miss some exciting activities due to frivolous spending now further on. But oh what a day!
I didn't go into the Zim side of the falls as that was another 30USD and another soaking and I decided that 70USD was just too much to see a load of water falling over a cliff. I also had the bonus of everyone else's photos as they were relying on my photos from Zambia to make them feel like they were there.
