The hostel we booked is called Daniels Lodge and it is right in the centre of the town. It's only 15 ringgit per night ($4.80/£3.20) with powerful hot showers too! It is a simple place, you walk up some steps and it's just one long room with beds lined up but it's all good fun and the beds are fairly comfortable too. Dinner was a yummy, big, filling curry - Cassie and I shared a naan & dips, a veg dish, a chicken dish, 2 tea tariks and a Chinese-style chicken claypot...and we paid 12 ringgits each (£2.50)! We love it here simply because it's so cheap to eat and sleep...and that's all you spend your money on as during the day you just walk in the jungle which is FREE!
On Friday, we were up and ready to hike up one of the mountains by 11am (that's good for Cassie J) The trek was so much fun with beautiful scenery! The climb was extremely muddy, we were slipping everywhere...I fell about 5 times and lost count how many times I actually stepped in mud puddles - I was plastered in mud up to my calves! NICE! It was such a laugh though and we ended up trekking with a guy from Holland who enjoyed laughing at Cassie and I taking the fun out of each other the entire way. We made it to the top after 2 hours of hard-core climbing J. Thank goodness a lovely lady gave us her packed lunch back at the town as she didn't want them (cheese sandwiches, orange and apple). And then we traded a couple of sandwich slices with some cookies from our new friend! Heaven. To our delight there was a concrete road back down the mountain so we started our decent back down.
There was a sign saying 'Moss Forest'...we were all intrigued so walked along the wooden decking and down the steps that lead to another path into the forest. We just kept walking, thinking that it would lead us back down the hill. Oh how wrong we were - 1 and a half hours into the trek we found a sign that said 1.55 k to the next town (which I hasten to add is in the middle of nowhere with no roads so no taxi) or 0.8 k back to the town we came from. It was 4pm at this point so realised we had no other choice but to go back the way we came to the start of the Moss Forest entrance. We were not too pleased as our legs were getting rather tired by this point. Grrr. We were much faster on the way back, it took about 50 mins which wasn't too bad after all but then we had to start the walk down the mountain on the concrete road again (which was still about 10k from our hostel). We stumbled across a Strawberry Farm so stopped for a Strawberry milkshake to lift our spirits. We had walked about 2k down the mountain when a couple in a van stopped and offered us a lift back to the hostel. We were so relieved; we jumped in and could not stop thanking him the entire way back! Cassie and I ended up seeing him at breakfast this morning so we paid for his breakfast without telling him as we felt we owed him big time for that favour and probably should have paid him something for the lift but just wasn't really thinking at the time. A taxi would have been at least 50 ringgit back so we still saved a lot. I had the best shower ever that day and enjoyed a chicken curry and rice for dinner. We chilled around a campfire that was in the bar next to our hostel with a bar of chocolate and a glass of red wine - we definitely deserved this after a long hard day!
No alarm was set for the next morning so we didn't actually wake up until 11am. After treating myself to some scones, Cassie and I went for a walk to see the Tea Factory. We ended up walking for an hour to a tea shop which just sold tea, no factory. But hey, it had great views so we sipped on some Chai Tea (yes Kat I think I may be drinking more tea than you at the moment...if that is possible!), played some cards, read a bit and enjoyed the views! It was nice to chill. But then it started raining...and didn't seem to want to stop either. We waited, and waited...and it was still raining so we decided to bite the bullet and start walking back in hope that some nice person would give us a lift. They didn't! Not one person stopped. We had a few cars beep, and a few people laugh and point at us as they went by, but not one kind person took pitty on us - both soaking wet, climbing up a never ending mountain road! Well I tell you it felt so good to get back and have another hot shower. Our dinner was another great Indian for just 8 ringgits and another night by the bonfire and a bit of pool with some very boring French lads.
Today is Sunday 10 March. We were up by half 8, had some Roti (like a naan bread/flatbread ) for breakfast, booked the bus to KL for 30 ringgit and by 10am we were ready to set off on another hike. It was a much easier trek this time, the path was flatter and not even very muddy, but it still had a few trees and branches to dodge which was good fun. At the end of the trail a sign said 9k back to the town so we were sensible this time and jumped in a taxi back to the hostel. I am now chilling in a cafe 2 minutes from the hostel. We have been here all afternoon drinking tea and eating all the food on the menu whilst attempting to write this! Oh and how could I forget to say that I remembered to skype muma as it's mothers day today! (wow, I am a changed person!) Lovely to speak to you muma and dada...miss you loads! Dad, I hope you treated mum to something nice today J
Back to the city tomorrow...
