Saturday 23 November was also spent catching up on sleep, and wondering around the city. We bumped into 2 older German guys who were a great laugh so ended up spending the afternoon with them booking the Death Road together. The situation was quite funny...we had me, an Italian, who can speak Spanish & English, then one of the German guys could speak just German and English and his friend could just speak German and Spanish. So the conversation was rather humorous but a bit of conversation in Spanish, English, German, Italian...I just love it! That's why I love to travel, to meet people from around the world, life is so much more interesting.
By the evening we had booked the Death Road for just 370B (I don't think we could have found cheaper), but the company was well organised, very professional, a great English speaking guide, brand new equipment, brand new bikes...the whole day was fantastic! We had 2 Aussie guys join us on the trip so 6 was a good number. The weather was fantastic...the road was pretty scary because we were lured into a false sense comfort as the first part of the road was well maintained, very smooth...and then we reached the real Death Road...which was quite different. At times it was very narrow, and was full of gravel and rocks and small rivers and waterfalls. The scenery was incredible and I was pleasantly surprised how serene the ride down was. We passed a few cycle groups but we never stopped in the same place and we passed about 2 lorrys along the way. I was the only girl and hence had to be strong minded not to try and 'keep up with the crazy fast boys'. But I feel like I went a good pace to enjoy the ride and the scenery. Yes ok the boys had to wait a little but they could enjoy the scenery whilst waiting anyway, i don't think they were too bothered! The company were great taking lots of photos and they made a video of us too. It saves us killing ourselves stopping to take photos down the road! At the end we were all exhausted as it takes a lot of concentration to stay on your bike, you are holding on tight down a very bumpy road for about 3 hours...it was tricky but we all felt proud that we made it to the end with no falls! We were spoilt with a buffet and then had a 3 hour drive back to La Paz. All in all it was a very enjoyable day and we ended up celebrating a good day with the 2 Germans with a show and sophisticated dinner...and a too few many glasses of red wine which didn't do our heads any good the following day!
