Tortuguero is all about the sea-turtles (Tortuga is Spanish for turtle) and it's here that a huge number of leatherback turtles come back to lay their eggs in the sand along the shore. Just inland is a huge tropical nature reserve, resplendent with a huge variety of flora and fauna (do you ever get one without the other?). We arrived late afternoon into San José and were heading off super early the next morning (we hadn't heard great reports on the capital so it was just a transfer point). Montezuma was a shuttle-ferry-shuttle ride away from La Fortuna, on the east side of Costa Rica in the Nicoya province. It used to be a fishing village but is beginning to get steadily more popular with eco-tourists, yoga hippies and backpackers. It's a small town with a few nice nearby beaches, a handful of restaurants, supermarkets and a bunch of souvenir shops.
