J: We have just had our first official day in India! The biggest impact was the heat there, over 30 celsius in the day and still over 25 in the evening, so I shaved my head to help keep cool. We went to the Gateway of India and then found a boat trip to Elephant Island, which against my first thoughts of it being full of elephants; it was instead full of caves and religious carvings which were impressive. We had a guide around the island who was teaching us lots about the religion, although we were like celebrities as the local Indian's wanted photos with us which was funny & strange experience. We had a guide who tried his luck at conning us with a crazy price; I paid him what was reasonable and walked away, after all I had bought him a beer.
Even though Sam kept up with the sun cream and I told her to keep covering up she got burnt on day one to the point she had sun stroke, she was being sick on the boat trip back to the main land. Once we finished the boat trip we decided we could walk back, got rather lost and as we were both sweating a lot we tried to get a taxi back but the drivers didn't know where we were asking to get to. So we just had to trust my sense of direction.... So first day traveling and we were lost in India and had no real means of finding our hostel. As you could imagine Sam didn't find this funny. After about an hour I found a driver that did know where we wanted to go, and it was just around the next corner! I must admit I felt relieved and immediately downloaded a map which works offline so we won't have that problem again!!
We went out and grabbed some street food, we had no idea what we were eating but it was tasty!
S: So what James has omitted to tell you, is that he had the key to the room with the hostel address on in his backpack the whole time lol!! We decided to visit the Sanjay Ghandi National Park. It was another extremely hot day and we ended up queuing for 3 hours for tickets although we did get to see white tigers and lions. We were also very brave and managed to get the train to and from the park without any problems.
J: We had our first tuk-tuk ride, they are like a death ride in the street but are great fun. Sam had been asking for a lemonade off the streets so we bought one, it was lovely then half way through drinking it, I realised that it was made with dirty water from a bucket which is what gave it the cloudy look. Either that or the sugar cane drink we also had, just has to give us Delhi-belly...?
S: We visited the Chhartrapati Shaviji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales) museum, which is full of beautiful statues, art and animals. Oh and not forgetting us, the biggest attraction in the place. I have really enjoyed the hustle and bustle of Mumbai, but I wouldn't want to live here full time.
J: Our last meal down the streets of Mumbai and as our order was being made there was some loud banging, then our chef put his stall on his head and ran away! Turned out the police were at the top of the street and the food stalls shouldn't have been there, but he came running back with our food as quickly as he went and even had our change. We have eaten street food all the time here and it's been excellent food, great to taste what the locals eat, although we haven't seen any other white people eating from these vendors, do they know something we don't?! We've really enjoyed Mumbai.
