J: Our flight plan to Vietnam had to change due to flight being cancelled, not a problem; we are travellers and took it in our stride.
Once we flew to Kunming and went to check in for the next flight the fool at the desk told me I needed a visa to get into Vietnam, I had it under good authority (my wonderful wife) that we could simply get the visa at the Vietnam airport. After defending my position & reliable source (after all I was right and this fool was wrong), the guy brought up a the official visa information that clearly stated we needed a visa and then Sam pulled out a scrap of paper and announced that we did indeed need a visa and we should have got it already! I clearly apologised profusely to the guy with my tail between my legs.
After speaking to the supervisor we got Wi-Fi at the desk try to get the visa to find out it was Sunday and the embassy was closed so no hope until Monday.... Oh and the flight doesn't fly until next Sunday again.
I was rather bemused by all this and feared we were now stuck in China for another week. After some quick thinking on my behalf (and a helpful local guy) we booked flights inside China to Jinghong where we could get a bus over the boarder to Laos! Never gone to and airport and changed a destination before but all adds to the fun.
So we got to Jinghong, a tiny airport, and got a to taxi to the bus station, and found the bus doesn't go until the morning, great news!
So we have now changed are plans up for the rest of Asia (although not 100% sure what they are yet lol) and going to see where the adventure takes us.
Laos here we come!!
S: Well I learnt that you can't just grab a visa on arrival to Vietnam!! I couldn't believe it, but in true Keeler fashion the show must go on.
But on the positive side we stayed in the best hotel because the bus station guard wouldn't let us sleep in the station and kicked us out, but we ate some amazing street food.
Although normally quite well prepared for a country we are visiting. We have no maps, no books and only a name of a town just over the boarder lol.
J: Oh and I forgot to mention, when in the Kunming airport the ATM there wouldn't let us get money out so we had to share the beef jerky back-up reserve and go hungry, thankfully we got cash in Jinghong.
Vietnam visa will be applied for as soon as we get some Wi-Fi.

Debbie Just returned from Laos with the family, check out the photos on Barleys Facebook page, you will need visas for this place as well, lol! But the good news is, guaranteed you can get them at the airport, need a passport size photos. Laos is beautiful, quiet, and very cheap, You will be pleased to hear, take USA dollars though otherwise you will get stuck with local currency. Love reading the Blog, Mike is now in Xiang working, told him to look out for your guys, lol. Stay safe. Love to you Both xx
Victoria Veness You two are just the best.....a little change of plan but you will make the most of whatever comes your way!! Love the fact James believes in Sam that much he is arguing with an official about a visa and Sam produces a scrap of paper!!! Hope you get maps and books sorted soon and continue educating us on local history from around the world. Take care, love you both. Xx
Steve Powell Pity you didn´t ask me, just been to Vietnam, ah well! Not been to Laos but Cambodia is good, visa at the airport there.
Yuri That just all adds to your amazing adventure!! Nothing faces the Keelers!!!
