Well after years of waiting, months of planning and five weeks in England we finally stepped off a plane onto Asian soil. After a 12 hours flight, which was fantastic I might say, Singapore airlines definitely knows how to treat their guests. With a hot towel and newspapers before takeoff, a large list of movies to choose from, I must have watched at least 6, and a wonderful menu, breakfast lunch and snacks, not to mention free alcohol, I was in heaven. Before we reached Bangkok we had a 2 hour flight from Singapore, which we just barely made, and then a few circles around the airport trying to find a coach to take us into town (we finally took a taxi- but a metered one so we didn't get ripped off) we made it to Khao San Road. On the taxi ride to Khao San Road I began to absorb my surroundings. The heat was welcomed, especially after 5 very cold weeks in England.
Khoa San road is lined with little stalls and food carts, people selling clothes, jewelry, tailored suits (Suit sir...Armani...) Thai's asking 'tuk tuk'... or if we would like a tour. Bars selling cheap beer and you can eat a large pad tai, or fried rice for less that $1. We stayed the first couple of nights at Khao San Palace, a little luxury to start with, a bit pricey as we paid 700 baht (35 baht to the dollar) for a room with a TV, flushing toilet and air-conditioning...although the air conditioning predominately blew out warm air. I must say where we stayed really wouldn't have mattered as we were so tired that we decided to take a bit of a nap in the early afternoon and slept right on through untill about 6 am, at which point we dozed a bit and got up around 9am...very early for us. It took us a couple of days to adjust to the time change, but soon enough we were back on our regular sleep schedule.
