So this trip started with Duncan and I dusting off our bathers, stuffing our backpacks to bursting point and heading off on holidays for..........well who really knows how long......
First stop, Croatia. We've just spent a week travelling down the coast sunning ourselves on every available beach. First was Zadar, where I learnt that although marble streets LOOK really nice, they're not exactly practical, especially when they're wet and you're wearing flip flops. I was happy to see that even the locals struggled to keep their footing at times. Made me feel slight less ridiculous when I went slipping and sliding.
The weather in Croatia was H O T. 30+ every day - which is hard work if you've lived somewhere that is lucky to reach 20 degrees on a summer day!
We then went south to Split, which was even nicer than Zadar, and as we continued onto Hvar and Dubrovnik we discovered that this was a theme with Croatia and that the further south you go, the nice the places get.
Split saw us do what backpakers do and wait until we get to where we're going before fnding a place to stay. Which in Croatia is easy. At every bus station or port you are greeted by a gaggle of women (and sometimes men) all shouting 'Sobre, Sobre, Room Room - Lady you want Room'. A quick look at their photos and then you follow them uphill (everything in Croatia is uphill) to their home where you rent a room for about £10 a night. Bargin. We followed this method down the coast and weren't dissapointed with our accommadation.
It wasn't until Hvar that we were able to put on our bathers and head to the beach, after the locals realised we were just pasty white people who hadn't seen sunshine in over 12 months and had perhaps one too many pints of beer, they stopped trying to roll us back into the water and we were able to lie on the rocks (no sand on Croatian beaches) and work on our tans. I'm proud to say that a week on, I finally look normal again and am no longer see through! Probably need to stop drinking those pints though......
Dubrovnik was the final stop on our Croatian Adventure and we certainly had saved the best to last. It's an amazing little town, probably one you have to see to fully appriciate. Our room was at the top of 200 stairs (told you everything was up hill in croatia) and from our balcony we had a spectacular veiw of the port. Although by the last night the walk up the stairs at the end of a long hot day was wearing a little thin and I probalby would have swapped the view for a room on the flat.
We spent our last 2 days doing what all good tourist do.......... lying on the beach!
