Hi!
Sorry it has been a while, spent an hour last week on the internet but this page wouldn't load.
The weekend before last I took a day trip with Hannah to a village that makes beads out of Bauxite, the whole village makes them. They showed us how they make them then we had a go and it was extremely difficult! It takes about 3 days to make a necklace! They mine their own rocks, then cut them into small circles, then drill a hole, then thread them, then sand them down on a rock to make them round. It made us appreciateour jewelry more.
We then visited a tie-dye and batique centre and made our own batique! We designed our pattern, cut it out of foam, dipped in wax, and stamped on material, then dyed the material. It was good fun!
The following day 4 of us went to a forest reserve which has over 600 types of butterfly! (i counted about 10) We had a tour of lots of different types of trees aqnd what they are used for. and the walk to and from the forest was beautiful aswell, about 5km.
Had another good week in Hospital last week and on Wednesday Iwent into little communities in the middle of nowhere to vaccinate the children and weight them by hanging them from a tree. It was good fun.
This weekend me and Jane travelled to Mole NAtional ark in the north of the country. It is a notoriously difficult trip but we were quite lucky. We ended up on a very strange large tro-tro which was meant to leave Kumasi at 6pm, but didnt leave until 10pm and we arrived in a town in the north at 5am. We then got another and sat on the engine over to the town near the park, Larabanga. The Salia brothers are twins that runa guesthouse in LArgabanga and we stayed there and they toured us around their village, with Ghanas oldest mosque. We then got a lift into the park and went on a safari treck, where we walk into the park with an armed ranger, following some elephant footprints until we found elephants. Got very close to the elephants and also saw 3 types of antelope, watrhog and 2 types of monkey.
The following day we went on a morning treck in the forest and saw more elephants! We then spent the day around the pool, which is on a hill overlooking 2 water holes where there are lots of elephants and other animals. A ganag of baboons turned up halfway through the day and stole our mango and crakcers and wrestled witha girl for her bag of pineapple. Some were very big . Then the watrhog came and ate the left over plastic bag. It was strange at Mole as everyone was white, and I have got used to being the only white person (obruni). Me and Jane got sunburnt and then stayed at Mole motel, which was extremely comfortable and had a working shower! (though we could only check in 3 hours late) We had to get up at 3.30 am to travel back to Nkawkaw, which we managed to get to by 5pm, which is good timing. The journey was extremely uncomfortable as most of the road was unsurfaced, the bus kept having to swerve to avoid goats and there were no toilets. It was worth it though.
I am looking forward to Mum arriving!
