Spanish Adventures
Sorry I still haven't updated about the rest of my spring break trip!
From Rome we took a train to Florence. I have to say I really like the high speed trains. They're fast, comfortable, and not too expensive. When we got to the train station in Italy I went to look for wifi to let the guy know from airbnb that we were on our way so he would be waiting for us with his keys. His response was "I gave keys to your friend Sarah". Now his English was very broken but after much confusion it turns out he has two apartments - one which we rented and one which another group of students who also happen to be studying in Spain rented. As it turns out he switched the keys and couldn't get a hold of the other group, so put us in a different apartment which ended up being really really nice - much nicer than the one we originally rented.
Once we put our stuff down, we met the friend of one of the girls I was traveling with who is studying in Florence. She took us to this market type place where we had dinner and then walked us around the city a little bit giving us tid bits of information about the history of places and what not. She also helped us plan what we would do the next day since we were really only going to have one full day there.
So we had planned to climb the Duomo (the giant church) in the morning, but we thought they opened an hour later than they actually did. So by the time we were ready to go there was already like a two hour line. So we scratched that. Then we decided to try and go to the Academia where "David" is, but that also had a ridiculously long line. So instead we walked over to the leather market where they have tons and tons of street vendors selling all types of leather stuff. I got a really cute little purse which I needed.
When we were done there we headed over the Ponte Vecchio, a big bridge with tons of jewelers on it, and got lunch at Gusta Pizza, which is supposed to have the best pizza. Now I have to say my pizza was really good, but not as good as the pizza I had in Rome. After that we hiked up to the Piazza Michelangelo which overlooks the whole city. It was really really pretty and relaxing (the weather was awesome so that helped).
Afterwards we headed back to the airbnb, stopping for gelato on the way of course, and rested for a little before we went out for dinner. The place we went for dinner everyone said was the best and luckily we made reservations because they were super busy, but the food was just kinda okay. Not as amazing as everyone said it was.
The next day we did wake up on time and climbed all 445 steps to the top of the Duomo and afterwards went to the academia. Seeing "David" in person really cool. Not only is it absolutely humongous but the detail Michelangelo sculpted with was amazing. Afterwards we still had some time before we had to leave our apartment and get to the train station, so we stopped in the Gucci musuem which was pretty cool.
Over all I really enjoyed Florence and wish I had had more time to spend there. There's tons of history and things to do, but it's not as huge and touristy as Rome so you can wal
