26 hours later after leaving our hotel in Siem Reap we arrive in Koh Tao. We're tired, smelly and hungry. The journey from Siem Reap to here was stressful and frustrating.
After 6 unnessasary annoyingly long rest stops, one 2 hour wait at the border, one broken brake pad, one hour wait at a garage in the middle of nowhere, one taxi, one 12 hour train, one one hour bus ride, a one hour catamaran journey and a overly priced tuk tuk we are finally here in Koh Tao! PHEW!
What we originally planned to be a 3 night stay here doubled and we are now on a night bus to Bangkok after spending 6 nights on Koh Tao. There were 3 Islands that we had planned to visit but after starting our island hop adventure on supposedly the best one it didn't make sense to visit another beach that wasn't as nice as this. So there we stayed, we have had a very eventful week which has been peaceful and relaxing but jam packed too.
Tom has planned to do lots of diving and as Koh Tao is famous for its beautiful dive sites and coral reefs it made sense to do it here. We checked into Big Blue Diving on Sairee beach, one of the many dive companies here and Tom is soon signed up to finish his course that afternoon which he has started back home.
We check into the room and it all kicks off, It was only a matter of time before Tom lost something and I am very surprised it has taken him this long, but he did it in style and within hours of arriving on Koh Tao Tom has left his bank card in a ATM. He spent the rest of the morning running 4km to the main town of the Island to the bank in a hope to retrieve his card. He returns empty handed £9 poorer after making an international call to cancel his card.
He soon forgets about his forgetfulness and is off on his first dive. On this dive he visits the Japanese Gardens here he saw Remoris, his second dive to Twin Peaks he sees Long finned bat fish and Scorpion fish. His next dive was to Chumpon Pinnacle, here he saw a small schol of yellow tail Barracuda and Parrot Fish. His final dive of the day was to White Rock, here he saw sting ray and almost sat on an Indian Ocean Walkman which luckily didn't sting him, if it did apparently he would of been in lots of trouble! So he's now a fully qualified diver. Whilst Tom was venturing under the sea I spent my time at sea level soaking up rays writing postcards. That evening we try and celebrate Toms diving qualification but it was never going to happen after a mammoth journey to get here we are in bed by 8.15pm.
How come whenever you go on holiday you always come across a good find just as you're about to leave? After 8 weeks of being eaten alive each night we have finally come across a small miriale. A mosquito coil, it works wonders and we have a bite free night for the first time in 2 months!
After 2 days of being here the time so far has revolved around Toms diving. It was getting irritating as I felt I was just spending my time here hanging around waiting for him to surface so the next 2 days we do some fun stuff!
Fun stuff number 1 involved us renting a kayak and kayaking out to sea to Mae Head Beach. Here we swang on beach swings and shouted at each other the whole way as I was/am incredibly scared of sharks and we were kayaking too far away from the beach for my liking.
The following day we took a water taxi to Nuag Yuan Island (Google this beauty!) This is one of my favourite places we have visited, it was so so beautiful. I had another one of my realisation moments here where I have to take a step back and just soak up the surroundings. This was somewhere I have dreamed about visiting. Nuag Yuan Island is the only Island in the world to have a sand bank connecting the two islands. It looks like the beach has popped straight out of a magazine. You can walk around the whole island in around 20 minutes and whilst doing so within seconds I fall over and immedietly after whilst recovering I then walk straight into a tree. I wish it had been filmed, a classic you've been framed moment and an easy £250. On Nuag Yuan Island I have my first ever go at snorkelling and I just couldn't get the hang of the whole breathing thing. It takes 45 minutes to finally get my head around it. It was pretty cool, I saw lots of colourful fish who liked to come and say hello.
The following day was a full moon, and being on the Thai Islands the full moon is a big deal. Especially in Koh Pengang, the party island aka the island for people who don't go to bed at 8.30pm every night. Full Moon on Koh Tao was great though, it was empty as most people head to Koh Pengang to drink buckets and as our hotel manager put it get bummed by a lady boy?
The next day we hired a motorbike. This was AWESOME. We both want a scooter when we get home now. We spent the day exploring every face of Koh Tao apart from the North as our bike just couln't get us up the steep mud track so we had to abort. But all the other beaches we visited were beautiful. My favourite was Shark Bay, this had perfect white sand, a palm tree lined beache and turquoise waters. The beach was no where near as busy as Sairee beach so we spent some time relaxing here. But it wasn't long before we both wanted to get back onto the bike and see what else Koh Tao had to offer. All together we visited _ beaches and Tanote viewpoint. This was a very fun day out and I would definitely reccomend hiring a bike and doing this to anyone who is coming here. At only 17km2 Koh Tao is the perfect size to spend a whole day beach hopping and motorbike riding through dense Jungle and dirt tracks.
Tom makes the most of the cheap diving here and amazing location and now he is passed signs up to a fun dive at Big Blue Diving. On this dive to the Twin Peaks he was charged my a Trigger Fish, saw Crocodile and Scorpion fish and a family of Clown fish aka Nemo's. Although he had fun he now wishes he signed up for the morning dive as that group saw a Whale Shark and turtles. Gutted.
We spend our last night here the same as every other, sat on the balcony of our beach bungalow with a mosquito coil. We're such party animals!
Im writing this now for the uncomfortness of a 15 hour night bus to Bangkok. Earlier in the week we had a little panic as when going to book our train to Bangkok we were told there are no trains available until the 19th due to Thailands Holiday and water festival. This is obviously an issue as we have a flight to Sydney on the 12th. Hence this is why Im sat here squished from every angle with everything piled on my knee hoping the next 15 hours go preeetty quick.
See you in Bangkok!
