Absolutely loved Japan...
Our first stop in Japan was Tokyo as soon as we arrived at the airport we noticed how organised everything was, we booked a coach from the airport to our hotel in Tokyo city which was about an hour from the airport. As we approached the coach station the assistant carefully placed our bags in the coach, once we boarded he stood at the door watching his watch and then told the driver to leave at exactly the right time to the second, took a bow and stayed in that position until the bus pulled away. We was amazed how polite and efficient that was and that's how it continued, Japan is with out a doubt the most clean, organised and efficient country we have visited to date.
Once we arrived at our hotel we went on a self tour of Tokyo city, we had to take the subway as Tokyo has several districts. The subway was mental at first as everything is in Japanese, we found that the map was also numbered so once you managed to find your destination location number you could get a ticket then follow that, which wasn't to bad. Once we arrived in the city we were quite shocked how quiet it actually was, until work hours finished then everything went crazy, there was people everywhere. The road crossings were especially mad, unlike home where you cross in one direction, here once the lights turn red people cross from every direction it's crazy.
Oh and it's freezing here maybe because in the phillipines in was 33 degrees and that's what we've been used to, the first thing we had to do was buy Kate a jacket as we didn't expect it to be this cold here.
one thing we won't forget is the heated toilet seats, I know it sounds funny but the fact of going to public toilets sitting on the heated toilets in the cold was so good.
So that night we just spent our time taking in all the lights, crazy amounts of people and trying to get our heads around that there were no English signs to direct us and you couldn't even ask for help without photos or pointing to what you wanted. But we loved it, it was all part of our adventure.
The next day we booked a tour of some of the highlights here Tokyo sky tower, a couple of local temples/shrines and a Japanese traditional tea ceremony.
It was very formal, a old Japanese lady welcomed you into a old hut brewed some Japanese green tea the ancient way and we had to drink it following a sweet, which is supposed to sweeten your mouth ready for the sour tea.
It didn't work the tea was horrible lol.
Whilst there we saw a traditional Japanese wedding which was pretty cool to see.
All in all the day was a really good day, we see some nice temples and was taken to a posh hotel for a Japanese style barbecue which the chef cooked us on a hot plate at our table.
We only had two nights in Tokyo so the following day we took the bullet train to Kyoto, which was the capital of Japan many years ago. Kyoto is out of the earthquake region so there are many temples still standing from the samurai days. And is known as traditional Japan. I was expecting it to be like old villages with ninjas running around with samurai swords on their backs lol but it was nothing like it. It's still quite modern just with more ancient temples and shrines within the city. We booked a tour for the following day to visit more temples and have to say some of them are so old and really nice. The temples are run by Buddhist monks and shrines by true shogun family's.
Our tour guide was so funny and was a dead ringer for Mr miagi out of karate kid. The following day we just walked the town taking in the culture, and just enjoyed people watching, they really are a different breed the Asians, it really was quite entertaining just chilling out with a beer watching them go about the day to day lives. That evening we booked a Geisha show and dinner where we went to a district where the real geishas walk around, live and work.
The show was quite good but all in Japanese so we didn't have a clue what it was about really, just enjoyed the dancing. It's a shame really we didn't have more time here in Japan there is so much more we could see and do here but was really just to get a taste of their culture which we have done and enjoyed. We would definitely like to come back sometime to explore more out of the city's in search of the ninja warriors I would love to see lol.
Our last stop was Osaka we were only there for one night as that was where we were catching our flight from to leave. Osaka was great though, a little like Tokyo loads of restaurants, lights and gaming rooms. Yeah I forgot to say the Japanese go mad for gaming, there are loads of them everywhere and always ram packed with japs. Apparently gambling is illegal here so what the do is play the for chips/tokens which they can exchange for food, cigarettes, etc then sell those for cash.
Sounds a bit long to make a bit of cash but they love it.
Our last day we tried to venture out, I found a samurai museum about 2hrs out of Osaka, so we got up early bought our train tickets and set off, about an hour and half later some how we ended up back at the same station we started at, God knows what happened after asking everyone for help we just ended up where we started So we give up lol, as it was our last day and we had a flight out that evening we didn't want to risk getting to lost and missing our flight, so we decided it was safer to go to visit the local museum and have a river tour instead. Which was still quite good anyway.
Next stop Cambodia, should be interesting just got horrible flight times so not much sleep for us this evening.
