Having been mildly disappointed by the shopping centres so far, probably due to being spoilt in KL, we were surprised to suddenly find a modern mall hidden within the very average looking buildings of the local town. Inspired, we indulged in some retail therapy buying coats, bags (but no lens as I had found it cheaper on Amazon-predictable). Once we had driven dad to complete boredom we let him choose the next stop and found ourselves signed up to a boat trip out in the mangroved estuary of a river. Having the boat and driver to ourselves we began the tour with a trip to the bat cave. Fully equipped with torches we headed along a wooden walkway into the living caves. The ceiling was coated with furry bodies hanging upside down on the rock whilst the occasional bat swooped by our heads. Making it out the other side we had a close up view of the mangrove trees before heading back the way we had come as the high tide had flooded the alternative exit.
Next on the agenda was lunch, as we were all starving, so we stopped off at the floating restaurant come fish farm. The floating fish pens held a variety of interesting species including friendly rays, horseshoe crabs and archer fish who could shoot water out of their mouths to knock pieces of bread we pressed into wooden posts into the water.
Last stop of the trip was to a eagle feeding site where we got the chance to see an aerie of eagles swooping and diving across the river and perched in the trees either side. I wished I had my telephoto lens as the birds were amazing!
Further downstream the river opened up into the sea and we motored out into the bay to get a good view of the coastline. Our boatman pointed out various natural rock forms in the shapes of faces and animals along the rocky edge of the river's mouth before we headed back inland to the jetty.
Now mid-afternoon, we took a lazy drive home, picking up some supplies on the way. We then had some time to chill before heading out for dinner. Another stop off at the yacht club allowed us all to check our emails and I ordered my camera lens!
Our last full day on Langkawi was the Wednesday and we had a chilled out day on the beach and driving round to ensure we had seen all of the island. We booked into the Lighthouse restaurant for our final dinner and were rewarded by a beautiful sunset during our meal.
