Another week in hospital has come to an end. Although only working Monday to Thursday it has been another busy week.
Monday was a quiet day so we spent most of it in Green doing bloods and talking to the doctors about the management of minor illnesses. We met a very concerned women who was convinced she was severely ill despite being perfectly healthy and we entertained two young children whose mother had been brought into the yellow zone. I made my first glove balloon and they drew a picture of me in return!
Tuesday we decided to get the bus in to save on taxi fares. What a faff! After arriving hot and sweaty at the bus station after the 15 minutes walk, we clambered on to bus only to be still sitting in the stifling heat 20 minutes later waiting for every seat to be filled. When we finally set off the breeze was a blessing and luckily we got dropped right outside Queen Elizabeth very close to the air conditioned emergency department.
After cooling off I managed to get out on an ambulance call, do some bloods and get quizzed by an enthusiastic consultant (one of the few I have seen enter the emergency department). I also met an elderly lady from England who I tried to take a proper history off of, but instead found she was very confused, not knowing why she was in hospital, or in Malaysia for that matter!
That evening we had booked in for a relaxing full body massage and reflexology session which definitely lived up to all expectations. Scented candles and herbal tea topped off preparing both body and mind for the mountain climb booked for this weekend. Afterwards we headed for Centre Point's karaoke booths with some of the other medical students from A&E and spent several hours singing classic Abba, Backstreet Boys, Robbie along with some Disney and a few traditional Malay tracks! Everyone got singing in the end with the highlight being Saravanan rapping along to Black Eyed Peas.
Wednesday was a bit more hectic with several serious Red cases admitted in the morning. The cases were quite emotionally difficult with a patient refused free treatment as she was not Malay, and a middle-aged man needed CPR. I volunteered to help but after a couple of rounds of CPR I was exhausted and the Medical Technicians took over.
On Thursday Emma and I did a late shift and since it was raining, and therefore my excuse of it being too hot to walk invalidated, we paddled in through the torrential rain. Arriving sodden we dried off before joining in the ward round at the start of the shift. A relatively slow afternoon, the highlight being a young woman giving birth to a healthy baby boy, meant we got off early giving us some time to pack for going to Mount Kinabalu on Friday.
