Santiago is our last stop in South America. It is a very pleasant city and quite a bit less backward than the other places we have been to; you can flush toliet paper here. Always a good measure of a civilised nation.
A lot of time in Santiago was spent wine tasting. Official and otherwise. We went on an official tour which was quite interesting. I touched the sillicone corks and got a reaction on my fingers. Note for future: Should not have breast enlargement as may react badly. The guide actually told me off, it was like being at school again.
The highlight for Santiago was definitely our trek into the Andes. It was only myself, Leah and our guide - a spiritual rasta named Gee. We saw 4 people all day! I must confess it was much harder and scarier than I expected. No worries though, Leah had emergency 'Smith Strop' kit containing crisps and doritos. This was to avoid any situations similar to that on Easter Island (see Easter Island entry for further info.)
It was quite dangerous at times. South America has a general lawlessness which is actually quite liberating and a lot of fun. It was a really rewarding experience thoughh as the views were spectacular, in the same shot (see pics) you can see cacti and snow capped mountains.
We had a spot of lunch by a waterfall and then did some yoga. In the middle of the Andes. In the sun. Hearing nothing but birds and water. And cracking Knees. But seriously, it was amazing.
So the first leg, South America, is over now. Our only regret is not staying for longer. Before coming here, we thought that South America would be a frightening place. But as as whole, it is so beautiful and varied and the people are so friendly. If you ever have the chance, or inclination, visit this place! It has certainly opened up my eyes to a whole new continent and I would love to come back and see more as I feel we have just skimmed the surface.
So, now we travel for 13 hours and lose a day getting to New Zealand... Thanks for following me this far and I know I've said it before but I love to get your messages so thanks to you all..
