Well, I have finally had time to come to grips with the technology and am ready for a practice run.
I see no reason why travelling in the UK cannot be regarded as exploring and so our first day trip was to Whitstable, a first for us. A lovely English summer day, hot in the sun and cool in the shade with a whipping salt-laden wind. Had delicious fresh cockles, a tradition for Martin whenever he is at the seaside (with apologies to those who may be shocked by our lack of observance of kashrut).
I was still suffering from attenuated yellow fever following my vaccination the previous day (felt like i had had a glass of wine and those of you who know of my lack of tolerance for alchol will understand how wobbly i was). We ambled along the harbour past West's where large mesh bags of whelks were boiling, a family tradition for many generations and some are even exported to northern France. Not tempted to try as they were the only disappointing meal i can recall having in France, like chewing rubber bullets in gloop.
We wandered the quaint shops in the high street and the narrow alleys to the quieter lane behind and, now we are pensioners, turned our back on the michelin restaurants and the like and settled back on the harbour for fish and chips and whitebait from Wee Willie Winkies. We recovered on a bench in dappled shade in the castle gardens. I foresee much of our retirement snoozing on park benches recovering from excessive lunches.

Karen Watson Hi Kate, This is my first experience of blogging and it's fantastic! This looks great. It sounds as though you're having a brilliant time and have leapt into post-work activity with a vengeance. I still can't bring myself to use the term retirement, let alone pensioner. Whitstable, whitebait, whelks and winkies! Sounds like fun. What a great start to your looong summer holiday. I hope you've recovered from yellow fever though! Kate, I MISS YOU! I've wandered into your room a couple of times, but you're not there! Doh! It's good to hear that you're enjoying yourself though. In fact it's fantastic hearing from you, so keep on blogging! Love to you both. Karen xxx
