Today we crossed the border into Malaysia as our visa's had come to an end for Thailand. We have had the best time in Thailand but are eager to move on to see what Malaysia has to offer. Once all the passport checks had been confirmed we searched high and low for some cheap accomodation in cenang the backpackers part of Langkawi. The great thing about Langkawi is that it is a duty free zone, therefore the beer is cheap wohooooo!!!!!
Once we had found some accomodation for a rip of price of Rm40 (although we did get air con which we arent use to as thats all they had left), Kate and I took a long walk to check out the area. We were pleased to find lots of cheap eats, with one in particular, a tandori Indian restaurant, a help yourself job for a ridiculously good price. Needless to say we were there most nights.
The first two days of Langkawi were spent in our usual manner, chilling on the beach, soaking up the sun and dodging the many little jellyfish in the sea, which Kate first noticed, naturally freaking out haha!!!!!! The beach was very nice, however nothing compared to others we have been to. The first night we had dinner on the beach as a treat, which was really good, with a few nice cold beers. We love it when they bring out the frosted beer glass's that have been sitting in the fridge all day. It makes a beer taste so much better. After dinner, obviously we hit the convenience store for some beers to relax on our balcony with, for 38p a can, you would be stupid not to haha!!!!! Outside our rooms in the courtyard there was a really nice looking fruit tree, however we werent sure of what it was. The fruits were green and looked so ripe and later on a Malaysian man told us they were green mango's. He said they taste beautiful and that the green ones are quite sour. So we decided we would try on. After peeling the skin, I clearly gave Kate the first bit of fruit to try to find out the verdict and she loved it. With the all clear from kate, I tickled my taste buds and to my surprise it wasn't that bad at all. It wasnt something I would eat all the time but the fella said its good for pickling and chutneys etc and we could clearly see why. He also told us about anotyher couple of fruit trees that we had seen which was cool as we never know what any of them are.
During our stay in Langkawi we decided to explore the island as usual, however when we went to get a moped, we were refused as we had no licence. I gave the lady my apologies and told her I thought it was the same as in Thailand, What a mistake that was haha, she went mental at me Qouting "Thailand is very dangerous, we are nothign like Thailand, we have laws and rules to abide by" etc etc etc la la la. It was so funny, so I told her to have a nice day and of we went in search of a bicycle, a much more healthy option anyway haha!! Eventually we borrowed two bike of this local guesthouse. Don't even get me started on the couple that owned that, they just wind me up thinking about them lol. Anyway of we went on the two worst bikes I have ever ridden with the two must unforgiving saddles that we have ever had the pleasure to come across, they were awful. We had a map and being Nieve to what the size of Langkawi is, we decided to cycle to the huge cable car at the Oriental village. After a 2 hour slog on this bicycle that was for about a 10 year old, making it twice as hard work, we arrived, only to find the cable car was shut for maintenance for the day lol. We were gutted after such a gruling bike ride. Instead, we had a quick look around this shopping village and had some lunch, then went to the local waterfall adjacent to the cable car called Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls, which was awesome. We had to climb about 800 steps to get to it but it was worth it to bath in the big pools at the top of it. The views were beautiful as well looking down to the coast. It was quite funny as kate got into this little plunge pool and because all the sides were so slippy she couldn't pull herself out, needless to say after several attempts I was in stitches, taking pictures of her struggling. Eventually with a little help we got her out of there lol. It was really nice up there and we spent a good 1.5 hours there before walking back down for a well deserved ice lolly and another 2 hour bike ride home!!! On the way back we stopped of at the harbour along the sea front for a rest and some bays to check out the beaches which were lovely but we didn't stop on them for long as it had been a long day and we just wanted to get the bikes back as our bum's were bruised and sore.
The next day we were going to get bikes out again to explore the other side of the island, however our bums were still very sensitive so we thought screw it, we'll get a car for the day. The Malaysian guy staying next to us joined us for the day splitting the cost 3 ways as he wanted to check out the island as he was thinking of buying a place there soon. We were fine with that as it made it cheaper for us. We started of visiting Kuah which is where the big eagle statue is on the port. This was only a quick stop, but it was a pretty impressive statue. Looking for a parking ticket, we were actually given a parking fine lol. I know, how stupid is that, they are right scrowngers to the tourists. After arguing with the traffic warden, he sent me to his boss in a building around the corner. Kate stayed with Stve and after about a half an hour debate they let us off with a warning. We were looking for a ticket machine but you have to buy coupons from the shops, however they don't exactly have big signs telling you where to get them from. The boss understood how it works in England so let it go, which was good of him. Needless to say I had a big smerk on my face going past the traffic warden upon leaving hahaha!!! The funniest thing was it was only a 6 pound fine hahaha!!!.
We then quickly moved onto another waterfall but as it was very dry there during that particualr month there was nothing very impressive to see at all. But we relaxed for a while and got a coconut drink to relax with in the shade for a while. We then drove past the crafts and culture complex, having a quick look, whcih had some amazing stuff in there for your home. Clearly we couldnt afford anything though so we watched some of them do some artwork adn then decided to try the cable car again.
We're so glad we went back to do it as it was really amazing. It goes so high up, Kate and Steve were very nervous. There were two viewing platforms, the first one slightly lower than the next. Steve stayed on the first platform as he was a little nervous, so Kate and I carried on without him and the views from the top platform were to die for. You could see the whole of Langkawi and it was such a beautiful day for it. You could see the waterfall we had visited the day before so much better from the cable car as well, it was gorgeous.
Our last stop of the day was the Buffalo park that Steve wanted to go to. We thought it sounded quite cool so we took a look but the actual buffalo park was closed for the day. Just up from here however was a mozarella farm. So we drove up and it was an Italian guy and his wife who owned it. If we had got there in the morning we could have been shown how they make it, but it would have been packed with people. So he gave us a little talk about the cheese and then let us sample some. It was amazing. He coated it in olive oil, crushed black pepper and basil and the taste was outstanding. Steve questioned him about his whole career and the cheese industry lol. It seemed to Kate and I that he was prying a bit to much, as if he was trying to look for business deals etc, it was a little weird but quite funny to watch. Anyway after indulging it was time to take the car back and get some grub and have a few beers to round the day off. This was our last day here. Its of to the Cameron Highlands tomorrow, wich we have been looking forward to for ages. I hope it lives up to our expectations!!!!!!!
