So today we had a really long bus through the day to get to puno. At the hotel me and Katy had a room right on the top floor which was a nightmare to walk up to because of the altitude but was fine after as we were on the same floor as breakfast!! The TV here was also great we got project runway and the kardashians in English!!! On the first night we went to a Jamaican bar and had a really good night just chatting and chilling which I loved. In the morning we took what the guide called the local limos to the lake. They were actually a guy on a bike and we were on wobbly seats on the front but ours did have music playing!!! It was really good fun. We then moved onto the boat where we could sit on the top but it was fairly cold but i managed it the whole way!! The view was amazing especially when we got to the floating islands. There were actually quite a few of them and everything on them was made if reeds even the houses. We stopped off at one and when you stepped on it it was actually quite soft!! They then gave us a presentation of how they made the islands using little minature models. We were then taken to look inside a house, the one I went in was sooo clean but very basic. When we came out of the house and the women were trying to sell us their goods we actually saw a live flamingo just walking around the islands!!! It was so exciting. They then dressed us up in the local dress which was really big but then the hats were so small that mine just kept falling off in all the photos. The men of the island then took us onto their lamberguini boat which was really just like a reed catermerange with like a podeum on the top which we could sit on whilst they drove around. It was a really good view of all the islands and each had a look out point and one was a fish shape!! After the trip we got back onto our boat and had a 2 hour trip to an actual island further into the lake. Here we had to walk up a stone path to the top of the island which again was hard work due to altitude. Some of the other girls were saying it reminded them of the Greek Islands but then the beautiful view out on to the lake made the difference. The lake was huge it looked like a sea it was that big. At the top of this island we got to the square before carrying on to a restaurant where they explained how the island worked. It was a very socialist island so they shared out all the money between all the families but they really unusual thing was that the whole of the island was based on knitting! So every person had to wear a knitted hat which represented their relationship status. Even for the guys which way they had the tassels of their hat would show if they were looking for a girlfriend or not! Then if they likes a girl she would ask to see the guys hat to inspect how good he was at knitting and if he was not good she would tell him to improve and then come back to her later!!! Then if a couple got married they also wore knitted belts and the guy would make one with his wives hair inside it! Also if they didn't follow these rules they were fined!!! It was such a strange system but even when we were there they all were wearing the traditional dress. After lunch we walked back along to the otherside of the island and I just chatted the whole way so it passed quite quickly!! Then we got back on the boat and headed off to where we were doing our homestay. When we arrived to locals met us off the boat and we walked up to the school with them. On this island they had their own language and just limited spanish and English so communication was difficult! Then we were introduced to our new family. Our dad was called huan and he was our main point of contact as his wife Lucy didn't speak much English. Then we went into the school grounds to play football against the locals. It was very competitive as neither side wanted to loose!! But it was a draw in the end. I have found out I am good in defence but am rubbish at running forward with the ball - I could get it off them but then had no aim with it!! Our game was cut short so the locals could show us their traditional dance. It was very lively!!! Then we were dressed up by our families in yet more traditional clothes. It was 4 skirts with a shirt and waistcoat, hat, belt, hat and these pompom things round our necks. Then they had us doing the local dance! It was hilarious because we had no clue so just jumped around and waved the pom-poms!!!! We were then lead by Huans daughter up to their home. It was such hard work in all the layers and then as we were on the highest lake on earth the altitude was bad and on top of this their home was the highest up in the village! She took us to our room which was part of the outhouses like their home is made of many different buildings in a u shape. They were very basic but still lovely. The children all came in with us and were trying to impress us by counting in English! The eldest girl was 14 then the middle girl was 10 and the little boy was 5. We all sat together for dinner which was really good but just so much food! We did try and make conversation but it was more like a game of sharades. The little boy was so cheeky though he didn't stop talking the whole time even though we had no clue what he was saying but he laughed the whole time. After dinner we thanked Lucy and went to bed. The next day the kids woke us up for breakfasts which again was really good but we had boiled egg that they just pulled apart with their hands so we did the same but I hate eggs so it took a lot to stomach it! The eldest girl didn't stay with us for breakfast as she had a 3k walk to college and the younger two went to the local school. Then we went to help Huan with his daily jobs. I think he thought we were a tad useless!! He walked his huge pig over and we just had to pour the food into his bowl and watch him eat. Then we stood by the sheep pen for ages whilst he tied a rope to each sheep. Then we had to help usher the sheep down a little way and sat and watched them graze for an hour. I did try and make awkward conversation but I don't think he got my mix of Spanish French and English! Then we just hearded the sheep to another place and handed Huan the pegs to tie up the sheep. Everyone else was hand ploughing fields whereas we were taking in the amazing view of the lake! We then just chilled looking at the view until our lunch was ready. It was very nice again and after we thanked Lucy for the food and walked back to the boat with Huan. We all said a big goodbye and then took the 2 hour boat back to Puno. It was sooo sunny so I sat on the top but I did burn all of my scalp. When we arrived we just hulled for ages. I had found out who I was doing my ski season with and Katy had found out who was in her uni flat so we spent the time stalking them and drinking the worst tasting box of wine ever as it was katelyns birthday! We then went out for food and drinks. We even went to a karaoke bar and did some singing before going back to the Jamaican bar where I won the limbo game!!!! It was a great night and everyone had such a laugh it was good :)
