After hearing good things about Koh Jum from Emille who ran the boat trip we did from Krabi we decided to head over for a couple of days to experience some real thailand as everywhere is so touristy in southern thailand.
We got a bus from krabi down to the coast and a local boat over to the island. The scenery was fantastic, a bit english country crossed with phi phi.
Koh Jum itself was tiny, one road that ran round the island and no electricity from 10pm which meant a few early nights after being out till all hours in Krabi.
We stayed in some bungalows (if you can call them that, more huts on stilts) which were run by an ace woman called Dila who was a local shamen!
This was definately proper backpacker terratory, big need for mozzie nets here and we had some interesting room mates who were massive, but stupid, bugs who kept flying into the walls.
Kat and coop decided it was about time for some exercise and went for a run along the beach. About half way down a massive thunder storm started and the run back was a bit faster as the lightening was hitting the beach! Definately a good motivator for running faster!
The following day we had a beach day and had a wander about, the 'resort' next door was amazing with proper house type bungalows, we got a bit of backpacker envy of all these people with fancy rooms.
On our last day we went out on a fishing trip with a couple of local guys. By fishing i mean a plastic bottle and some fishing line.
The contest began with Kat catching the first fish, claire soon matched her and it became a 2 person contest as coop spent 2 hours catching absolutely nothing, which didnt do much for his male ego.
Finally as we were about to finish up coop finally caught his first (but tiny) fish and Kat and Claire were on 3 a piece.
Coop had a bit of a run of luck and ended up getting 4, but Kat piped him to the post and caught another 3 bringing her total catch to 6, Coops to 4 and claire at 3.
We were all very pleased with ourselves until we realised that the locals got about 50, but hey ho, we still had the winner with claire catching an actual fisherman, which he was a bit surprised and slightly worried about!
We took our haul back to the hotel next door where we'd booked the trip and they cooked our very impressive catch for us, it tasted amazing, and we spent most of the time trying to figure out whose fish was whose. the only one we could tell for sure was coops baby first catch.
Lesson Learnt: Never sit too close to claire when shes fishing, shes deadly with a hook!
