Karen's Travels
Hello everyone
Travelled to Shenzen by overnight train on Wednesday and arrived in Hong Kong Thursday lunch time - over 20 hours travelling. We had to go through immigration at the railway stations, filling out departure cards for China and arrival cards for Hong Kong. First night spent in a very nice hotel which has 22 floors! All the buildings are high here (I was on the seventh). We had our final meal together in the evening at an Indian restaurant and then everyone went their separate ways on Friday morning. I made some good friends in the group and will miss some of them. We transferred to the YWCA Anne Black Guesthouse yesterday, which is very basic but fine. Again, a very tall building. The bathroom is next door. We went down to Hong Kong harbour in the evening and saw the view you can see in the photograph. We are on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong and today we are going to take the ferry to Hong Kong island and take the world's highest funicular to Victoria Peak, which looks down over the city. Unfortunately, it is rainy and overcast today, so the view may not be at its best. I must say I'm glad of the rain as it's so sticky here. Looked around the night markets last night - lots of tacky souvenirs on offer and some tasteful ones. I'm quite confident at bartering now to get a reasonable price - it's surprising how low the traders are prepared to drop, and yet they are still making a profit. A little about Hong Kong from the guide: It has a population of 7 million; was ceded to Britain as a colony in 1842 and returned to China in 1997. It's divided into three main regions: Hong Kong island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Victoria Bay between Hong Kong island and Kowloon is continually being narrowed due to land reclamation. 96 per cent of the population is Chinese with English and Cantonese as official languages. It is sub-tropical with 90 per cent rainfall occuring between March and September. Hong Kong is the world's busiest container port, one of the world's four largest gold markets and has Asia's third biggest stock market. More interestingly, there are lots of churches in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend as we fly to Tokyo early tomorrow. Down the side of one skyscraper is a HUGE banner saying 'Jesus is Lord' so I took a photo of it! I need to get going now, so that's all for now. Thank you for your messages. Love to all.
