If a whirlwind can last 3 nights, then KL was a whirlwind stopover. We had a good flight in on the evening of the 15th and eventually plonked ourselves down into a metered taxi and headed into the unknown. The reason our classy looking B&B couldn't accommodate us was yet to be known, but they'd reserved us a night at a newly opened hotel just down the road and, bonus, it was only going to cost 100 RM instead of 220 RM. The driver pumped Hotel 126 into the GPS and off we went, airport... highway... underpass.... side street... pitch black back of beyond. Even he said - have you been here before? Nope! And when we pulled up... "Are you sure this is your hotel?" By 9.30 pm it could almost have been a cardboard box - it didn't look that bad. Just very Chinese. Which in Malaysia means a lot of security bars. Over the doors, over reception, over the entry hall... Once we were in however it was the smell of fag smoke permeating the hall ways that hit first. We had asked if it was a non-smoking room. "OH YES! You can smoke! Or not!" Ahhhh... one of those places. As it turns out we'd caught it within 3 weeks of opening and the room itself was spotlessly clean, new bed, new linens and the obligatory ashtray just in case. But the room was fresh enough. And we slept like logs. Chuffed out for Roti Cenai breakfast in the morning and then the owner of the original B&B picked us up and we headed to smoke-free nirvana. Literally. Couple of ashtrays well away from the main house - and if anyone thinks of having a "no-one will notice" ciggie in the house, it's an instant chucking out offence, no money back and a cleaning fee charged to the credit card. Good stuff. It was only 9.15 am Thursday when we got there and we were straight into the pool which was sitting at about 31 degrees - perfect. Then we both pretty much realised we were exhausted. Mentally, physically, etc and thought what's the rush - so slept in a super comfy bed for a few hours. Went exploring for lunch in the village... had another swim... made a cocktail with our travelling booze supply... accidentally had another snooze then went for dinner and before we knew it, it was bed time. And then, to both our surprise, we slept all night too. Told you it was a whirlwind. Saturday saw us launch into gear after breakfast and we were on the KL Express train into the city by 9 am - We had a goal. The Petronas Twin Towers - once the tallest buildings in the world, but now that's Dubai's Burj Khalifa (don't worry - next stop). KL's public transport can be described in one word - Muesli. Bit of this, bit of that. Light Rail, Monorail, Commuter rail, Intercity rail, buses (free and paid). We got to the towers and were quite happy to look at them from the outside - bit like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. We then experimented with GoKL - the free purple buses that run in various lines all over KL in a spaghetti junction fashion. We headed to Bukit Bintang and saw the malls - big, glossy, expensive and air-conditioned. But given our luggage is already nudging over 30Kg each, not including cabin bags (and there's really nothing we need), we eventually made it to Chinatown for lunch and a look at KL's Central Market - the city's oldest. Actually pretty darn cool - there were many things could have been bought - but we were strong and truly, everything we need is in our bags (and practically - nothing else will fit). Had lunch and then wandered the Petaling Street flea market. Oh - if only I needed a fake handbag - because this was indeed fake handbag heaven. You know they mean business when they have catalogues to make your choice easier. It was a hot, hot day and super sunny, so whilst it was fun to see the contrasts between the brash modernity of the towers and the shabby, colonial chic of Chinatown, we were keen to get back on the train to Sepang. That's right - in a mere 2 weeks our neighbourhood will be alive to the screams of Formula 1 racing car engines. It was a huge relief to plump down onto the train home and we couldn't believe we'd only been out and about for six hours. KL is a sprawling mess. Or, to be kind, a somewhat "built" environment. We're sure there are parks and gardens and so forth - but it has none of the small town wandering charm of Hong Kong say. Alright to spend a day since we were in the neighbourhood. When we got home it was of course, nap time, dinner time and early to bed time in anticipation of our big flight on the morrow - 10.30 am KL to Dubai. (that's right... the reason we couldn't spend the first night in our nice B&B - a Chinese tour group went on a drunken rampage and totalled a bathroom that then had to be repaired. Yep. God Bless the travelling public, because no one else will. And the money we saved on that night paid for our day out in KL and lunch and dinner.)
