Jus and Phil's Travels
Byron Bay
24th-28th August
On our way to Byron Bay on the Oz Experience, our first stop was zorbing - i.e. rolling down a hill in an inflatable wet plastic ball like a hamster in Telly Tubby land! It was extremely silly and fun as you can tell from the pictures! We were slightly disturbed at the end to be 'reborn' as zorbenaughts when we jumped back out.
As we made our way down the Gold coast we stopped off at Surfer's Paradise - a beautiful beach spoilt by a mishmash of residential sky-scrapers. We then headed inland to the unique hippy town of Nimbin - not our cup of tea, in fact we were cautious to eat or drink anything as it was likely to be gange-infused. Their speciality was 3 'cookies' for $10 sold openly off the street! However we did find some nice gift shops and there was a traditional candle factory.
We finally made it back to the coast to the not-so-scary, chilled Byron Bay. We were staying at the very cool Arts Factory Village just outside of the centre. There was so much to do there from samurai sword to didgeridoo making! We really liked the Buddha bar where they had delicious meals and live music. While we were there we took part in some yoga, Phil got to the semi-finals of a table tennis competition, Jus got to dance and we played lots of games. The highlight was the 'Pighouse Flicks' cinema which had a groovy planetarium feel to it, where Jus got to have a proper chocolate cake and real tea (hard to come by in oz) whilst watching a funny film in comfy sofas.
Byron Bay itself is a really nice place to chill either at the beach or around the nice shops and restaurants. There was also a famous lighthouse walk everyone does which took you to Cape Byron, the most easterly point of Australia, and up a steep incline to a huge lighthouse with a great view. On our last day in Byron Bay we had proper rain for the first time in Oz! But it didn't matter as there was plenty of activities to keep us entertained.
