Hi all! Well it has been an exhausting few days both physically and emotionally!
Our last day in Phnom Pen was really quite depressing as we went to see the S21 prison where thousands of Cambodians were tortured under the Khmer Rouge. It was awful seeing the tiny cells and the conditions the prisoners were kept in and there were still drops of blood on the ceiling! (Typical scene examiner I was thinking about testing it with H+!!) We then went to see the Killing Fields which is where thousands of Cambodians were excecuted and buried in mass graves, including women and children. It was horrible as there were still pieces of clothing on the pathways and even teeth! Can't believe I knew nothing about this and it only happened 30 years ago. Our guide had lost most of his family to the Khmer Rouge and yet he was so forgiving of the soldiers like all of the Cambodians we have met. It was horrific but I am really glad that I went. That evening we went to a local Cambodian's house for dinner. When we arrived the downstairs part of his house was a school and there were children being taught English. They were so lovely and really good at English! Can't believe how beautiful Cambodian children are and I want to steal a few!! The meal was so delicious and think I am officially addicted to Chicken curry. Having eaten a cricket the previous day they brought out more tarantulas for dessert! Could not stomach a whole one but I did eat one hairy leg which tasted like a hairy leg!!!
The following day we had a long 6 hour bus journey to Siem Reap. When we arrived we stopped off at the local children's hospital and gave blood (don't worry mum and dad it was perfectly clean and safe). It was so rewarding doing it especially as it was children that would benefit. They even took our photo so when a child receives your blood they get to see who it was from! Went out in the evening for Alex's birthday and had dinner (another chicken curry) in a place that had traditional dancing and we all got on stage at the end to have our photo taken with the dancers (photo to follow!). Was a relatively early one as we had to leave the hotel at 0445 the following morning!!
After a very early start we arrived at Angkor Wat, which is the largest temple in the world (well I think it is I wasn't paying much attention at that time in the morning!) Having spent an hour sitting in the dark waiting for the amazing sunrise we were so disappointed to find it was cloudy and we didn't see anything!! Nevertheless it was still beautiful to see and experience (we did return later in the day when it was sunny and got better photos). We then visited a couple of other temples and also a landmine museum which was really interesting. The street kids were beginning to grate on me as although they are so cute the only English they seem to know is 'one dollar!' or five for one dollar' in really whiny voices and all one after the other or sometimes sung in unison! After lunch we went to the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed. It was sooo cool and there were a few Lara Croft poses although I didn't bring the costume with me! This evening we have just been to the night market which was brilliant and I think I bought just about everthing in it and having spent weeks mastering my haggling skills I was too tired and let them rip me off! As we were leaving we discovered 'Dr Fish' which is where you put your feet it a tank of water and hundreds of fish nibble the dead skin! It was absolutely brilliant!!! Couldn't stop giggling as it was so ticklish but my feet feel amazing now. Want to go back again tomorrow!! Got another full day of temples tomorrow and then we leave for Bangkok the following day. Can't believe the trip is nearly over!! Am off to Ko Samui on Saturday and am looking forward to relaxing for a couple of weeks xx
