Freycinet National Park is a peninsula south of Bicheno. It's main site is Wineglass Bay and is one of the top 'must-sees' in Tassie. Keen to avoid the hoards, I had walked up the 800 steps to the look out by 9am. I stopped for some pics and chat with two couples, who both agreed that although it was beautiful they preferred the bay of fires beaches, me too!
I walked down a very steep path to the beach itself with squeaky white sands and clear blue waters. The thought of walking back up the hill was far from appealing so I headed off on the 11 km circuit via Hazards Beach and a variety of forest, including lots of manuka trees. It was good walking weather again but the trek back was long a dull in parts. I did the circuit in 3.5 h and signed myself back in to the walkers log.
Feeling a little peckish I headed back to Coles Bay via the info centre, where a lovely Scottish chap called Darroch was very helpful. I also stopped at Honeymoon Bay, which was a bit disappointing, I hope this isn't an omen! For lunch I had a local specialty pie (see pic) washed down with an ice cold ginger beer. I managed to log into the free wifi and discovered that my friend Ansa has had her twins- well done!
I then drove out to Cape Tourville on a dubious road with BIG potholes and soft edges, to the lighthouse. I did the walk around the area which provided some sheer drop views down the cliffs and across to Wineglass Bay. From here I stopped at Sleepy Bay, a lovely little pink granite bay with kelp forests coming virtually up to the shore and some rocks which wouldn't look out of place with the remarkable rocks on KI!
On the way back to Friendly Beaches I did a short detour down Flacks Road which provided a good view across Moutling Lagoon Game Reserve. I was feeling pretty tired by then so I decided to head back to the tent.
A chat with the wallabies whilst cooking supper seems to be the thing that happens here! I walked to the beach for a pink skied sunset before settling in for the worst nights sleep. The wind picked up during the night and kept me awake for 2 hours...grrrr.
