We left Phillip Island and continued along the south coast which is also the very bottom of Port Phillip (at the top of which is Melbourne). There's some cool seaside towns around here and it all seems quite genteel. Sorrento is very posh with its distinctive yellow sandstone Georgian buildings - and the strange nasal Melbourne accent seems rife here. We got the ferry across the spit to Queenscliff which was less posh and more Victorian - there were some stunning buildings but it all seemed a bit hit and miss whether any of them have been looked after or maintained or restored.
Onward and we passed through Torquay to start the reknowned Great Ocean Road drive. The weather was a bit dull and this definitely dulled our experience. But also the lookouts are crap! And it's simply not that impressive - especially if you've seen the west coast of the South Island of NZ! Maybe my expectations were a bit high. Also my back had seized up after 5 hours of driving every day - i was a bit grumpy and hard to please i suppose - sorry Mum!
We got to Apollo Bay which is a really nice spot and stayed at the brand spankers YHA - we were VERY impressed with this place - like it was straight out of an Interiors magazine. And i had a bath there - lovely!
