Olha! thought it was about time to update this page and post a journal entry from the wonderful country that is Spain, as it would have to be the most amazing holidays I have ever been on in my life.
Julz and I (Sarah) flew into Madrid where we found ourselves in beautiful weather amongst beautiful people, which is a very rare occurance when living in London. We arrived mid afternoon and were quite perplexed at how all the shops were closed and there was no one around until we realised it was siesta time..
We had a quite night (our only one) the first night as we had an early bus ride up to Pamplona the next morning. We made some aussies mates on the bus ride up, who we seemed to run in to almost every day in every city of our entire trip..
We arrived at our campsite early afternoon and was given our tent number and street which we where on, we were on the Hume Highway, and I was so stoked to be on it as I have driven on that highway more times than I can even count..Amongst the other streets were Ramsey Street, E Street, Brisvegas etc. Our neighbours, literally the tents across from us were occupied by numerous Pagewood boys..small world yes.. That afternoon everyone on the tour (800 bogan aussies) gathered around the pool and drank sangria, where we found even more people we knew.. I met some guys who we met on our Gallipoli tour group, a guys whos sister I was friends with in Primary school in QLD, Julz met an old co-worker and the brother of her ex roommate.. to be honest it didnt feel like we where in Spain at all, we could of been at a random campsite in the middle of NSW!!
That night we consumed more Sangria that could fill that swimming pool and danced the night away to the bad live band that played at the campsite. The following morning was the opening ceremony of the festival which meant our tour guides roamed up and down our 'streets' at some ungodly hour screaming 'wake up farmers' so we put on our white clothes and red scarves and headed into town for some more carry on, everyone on the bus was still feeling and looking quite ill from the night before especially Julz!!
We got into town at about 9am and where in the middle of the town square and had 3 hours to kill until the official party began, so by killing time the whole town has the biggest sangria fight that I have and will ever see, Julz and I went absolutly nuts and everyone that we saw who had even a hint of white clothing left on them we dowsed in Sangria, our hangovers slowly dissapeared when all that excitment and adreniline kicked in (plus the fact we started to get drunk again) When you go to the shops you buy a bottle of sangria to throw and one 2 drink, it was nasty ?3 sangria. I recieved a large chunk of glass to the leg, but didnt feel any pain, I just wrapped my red scarf around it and worried about it later!
After 12pm the official opening, with loud fireworks, streamers and more sangria we then proceded to go the mussel bar, where all the drunk aussies jump of this one and a half story statue straight into the crowd where other drunk aussies 'try' and catch you..this is probably one of the most stupidist and most dangerous things I had ever seen anyone do, well up until that time in my life as the bull run was to follow the next day! One of the guys we where with jumped off and the crowd only caught the top half of him so he smashed his knees and bruised them up pretty badly, we later spent a couple of hours in the dodgy hospital together waiting for someone to look at our injures..there where plenty of injuries on that mussel bar guys getting there heads cracked open, breaking there legs etc etc.. very stupid..
The rest of the day we walked around drinking yet again more sangria in the stinking hot sun and parting with all the crazy Spanish in the streets, those Spanish party so hard. It came to about 4pm and we where so recked so a couple of us found this lovely park where we had a 'rest' along with about 200 other people all decked out in their once white, now a lovely shade of sangria purple outfits..after a quick stop to the dodgy hospital we managed to make our way back to the campsite, which some people didnt and managed to sleep in the park all night. We needed a good rest as we needed to be up at 6am the next day for the 1st bull run.
Yet again we awoke to the 'wake up farmers' but this time it was still dark and at the sarah friendly time of 5.30am..So back on the buses and into town, where there is people still asleep in the parks, gutters, shop fronts, with broken glass, streamers, rubbish absolutly everywhere in the entire town, words can describe the hammering this town took the day before. The clubs and pubs were all still open with people still partying from 12pm the previous day and no doubt most of them were staying up so that they could run with the bulls at 8am today!! After nearly getting trampled in the grounds and getting harrased by every single spanish man we got our ticket for the stadium, which is where the bulls and the people run into after running through the streets. Once all the people have made it into the stadium, which there where hundreds, they release 5 bulls, one at a time to attack all the idiots still alive after the bull run!
As we were totally recked again, everyone went back to poolside at the campsite where we all made our own home made sangria in big buckets with vodka and champagne and about 2ml of orange juice and got 3rd degree burns from the sun! a wonderful day for my health and well being thats for sure. That night was the fanatics (our tour group of bogan aussies) fiesta, where we all had to wear our fanatics shirts and party in town in the jam packed streets with all the spanish. Our tour leader had a huge Australian flag that we all had to follow around town, all the spanish had no idea what the hell flag it was and all just pointed and stared at us!
The next day we just all played cards out the front of our tents as it was the last day and we needed to have a well earned rest from all the partying..Next day we got the bus up to San Sebastian which is a gorgeous little beach side town with the most amazing tapas and tapas bars..mmmm.. honestly breakfast lunch and dinner we had tapas and beer or tapas and wine. The tapas in San Seb is served on little pieces of bread and just spead all over the bars, you just stand at the bar and each as much as you can, it was soososo yummy!!
As this place is only a small town, once again the aussies took over the place, it was ridiclous how many were there. Julz and I hired bikes for one of the days and every 2 minutes we stopped cause we saw someone we new from either home, London or one of our new mates from Pamplona, we were like we are more popular here in Spain that we are at home!!! We attended the clubs and bars there, and they are all so cheap, ?1 shots and each vodka and red bull was 2 parts vodka and 1 part red bull, talk about lack of RSA!!!
Ok enough about all the alcohol, as you all may get a little worried that we turned into alcoholics..The beaches were so amazing, and its the first beach I had seen in about 9 months which made it even more gorgeous. We stayed in a little pension which was really cute, it was like staying in grandmas cottage, and at only ?20 it was a bargain!
Next on the adgenda was a over night bus ride to Barcelona, which we got on at 11pm and arrived in Barcelona at 7am and because we couldnt check into our hotel till 12am we had a little nap in the park, we looked at felt so seedy and seriously looked like homeless people, we had a boy with us so we where safe from the all the gypsies, as like julz said no one would try and rob us anyway cause we looked like one of the homeless!!
Barcelona was pretty cool, so stinkin hot though. We went to the beach a fair bit and did our bit to keep all the skin cancer doctors in a job! Went to an awesome night club right on the beach called Baja, which costs ?18 to get in, but all of you that know me well do you really think I paid that ?18 and didnt sneak in..hehehehe everyone behind the bar where supermodels, both girls and guys with next to nothing on..so good for everyone elses self confidence!!!
Well as you can tell Spain was such an awesome country and Ive never met anyone who can party like the Spanish do, we found out the reasons they have the siestas in the afternoons!!!! Well until next time, which will prob be when Luce returns from her Contiki trip.. miss and love you all trillions and see your heads in OCTOBER!!! yeyeey!! Love Sar xxx
