We awoke to a slow moving ship and more fog.
The fog persisted and thwarted any ideas of a landing and walk as polar bears could be behind any ridge. So instead we zodiac cruised and found really interesting copepods (krill) - little butterfly molluscs and their slightly bigger predator, watched seabirds feeding and saw a gyr falcon and snow geese through the mist. Acacia found the way back to ship perfectly using her garmin gps!
Back on board we headed to Croker bay with two tidewater glaciers feeding into it - we spent an hour or so watching white blobs on the landscape as they materialized into polar bears - one walking to the water and swimming off into the ice - later in our zodiac cruise we saw him wandering off quite a distance from the water on a sandy ridge.
We anchored and the fog started to slowly roll in but it didn't thwart the planned zodiac cruise which for most part stayed in the sunshine. Miko was our driver and we cruised through the ice along the front of the glacier, stopping with engines off to listen to the air escaping from the ice. With 25 minutes to go of cruise time we slowly made our way back to the ship forging a path through thickest ice which jolted the zodiac as we bounced off it. We were making good progress when Miko shouted bear on the ice. What followed next was a magical 25 minutes watching a polar bear moving through the ice - swimming in our direction then changing course and swimming back. Finally it made off deeper into the floating ice as the cold fog came down and we returned to the ship very happy but with numb extremities! WOW what a sighting - today's picture.
