Our transfer to Cambodia was a bit of a scam, but we got through it but were a bit gullible! We were literally just saying to Darius and Toby that you should never change money at the visa when we were dropped off at this visa place and escorted to the boarder by a Cambodian who had all the English chat, calling the boys geezer and saying lovely jubbly. He then gave us a brief history of Cambodia and started to say we needed to get money out in Thailand and exchange it in to Cambodian Reals at the bus station because it was a government official money exchange. Us falling for the charm did as he said, guess it's not called Scambodia for nothing! Luckily we worked it out when we got to the hostel that we didn't lose out on too much money!
We settled in to our hostel quickly, it was owned by an English man who had lived in Cambodia for 3 years. We ate a good dinner and arranged our trip to the temples the following day. We decided to do the inner circuit seeing the main temples including Ta Phrom, where tomb raider was filmed and finishing with Angkor Wot at sunset. It was a really good day and the temples were impressive. We were glad we finished with Angkor Wot because it was definitely the highlight. Our tuk tuk driver was really nice and advised us to watch the sunset from a hill near the temples, it was definitely a good decision as the view was really nice and the sun was a gorgeous colour. We had a great aerial view of Angkor Wot too. It was a great day but we were templed out after and for us one day was enough.
That evening was one of the funniest we had, we started drinking $1 beers at the hostel bar shortly moving over to vodkas and started to play drinking games. We went to a couple of bars on Pub Street; Angkor What? And Temple which had a podium where the boys spent most of the night on. We then went on to the club Hip Hop where we were the only Europeans. The Cambodians loved this and kept asking for photos with us. There was a mix of American and Cambodian music but we left shortly after they started to play slow songs. We got back to the hostel at 5am.
We woke to a knocking at our door, it was Toby telling us it was 1.30pm. We had arranged to meet Go Go our tuk tuk driver at 2pm to go to the floating village. J felt so rough that he didn't think he could make it, we ordered food at the bar in the hope that it would make him feel better but he couldn't face it. After another quick lay down he decided he could make the village. The tuk tuk ride was about an hour and we didn't stop laughing about the nights antics, this soon stopped though when we boarded the boat and saw the poverty that people lived in on the floating village. It is the dry season so the river wasn't up to the level of the houses but in the wet season it is. We took a boat ride along the river ending up in the largest lake in South East Asia, it felt like it was the sea because it was so big. On the way back we got out of the boat and walked around the village, it was so poor we all felt a bit bad that it could look like we were visiting to see poor people. But it was completely different from what we had expected, we expected a busy village with markets etc… but it was a lot more basic. Maybe we should have expected it knowing that Cambodia is the poorest country outside Africa.
