Las Vegas may not have been for me but it was nevertheless a useful stop off before hitting the road for another road trip, this time I'd be driving.
We rented a car from Las Vegas Airport for 9 days in total which gave us enough time to get to the Grand Canyon, see the Red Rocks of Sedona, Drive the last remaining part of Route 66 and do the hike of a lifetime to Havasu Falls and Supai.
Day 1
Picking up our Nissan Versa at midday we headed to Kingman, Arizona. On the way we stopped into the old silver mining town of Chloride. Chloride was a charming as it sounds, picture gray wooden buildings dusty roads, old rusty cars that haven't moved since before I was born and tumbleweed blowing in the wind! I liked it; it felt like we had driven into an old western. We stopped into the Tourist Information/General Store/Hillbilly hangout to get a better map of the area. No word of a lie there was a big grey haired guy in dungarees with a huge beard and a scary looking skinny woman with no front teeth in the store buying what looked like moonshine.
Arriving to the relative metropolis of Kingman we found a nice motel that gave us a pretty good deal with breakfast, pool and Jacuzzi.
Day 2
Faced with a choice we could either head out of Kingman on the last remaining stretch of Route 66 or take the freeway. Saving Route 66 for the return leg we jumped on the freeway and headed for Williams. Williams is a really nice little Western style town, kept popular by the fact it is the main route to the Grand Canyon. We arrived looking for somewhere to stay but being so close to Grand Canyon it turned out that prices were a little out of our range. Luckily we were still lugging around the tent that we bought so camping proved to be our best option. To make things a little more comfortable we bought a couple of cheap camping mats from a local store and pitched our tent in the last available pitch at Kaibab Lake camp ground.
