Josie's Giant Adventure
Hello
I spent another day in Singapore wondering around Chinatown and through the city. I had some intersting meals out in Little India where I didn't really have any clue what I was ordering but it was all delicious curry and reminded me of Jai Krishner on Stroud Green Road. I tend to get stared at quite a lot, pehaps partly for being western, more so for having red hair and probably even more so for being a woman eating on my own which I don't think is the sort of thing Asian women perhaps do. Anyway, its more curiosity than intimidating and a few friendly locals have chatted to me.
From Singapore I got a bus to Kuala Lumpa. The journey went without a hitch and was pretty quick. I stayed in a hostel that was pretty scummy but a bargain price and the people who run it was so friendly and there was a roof top bar with view of the sky tower and beer for a pound, what more could I want? I'll tell you what more I could want - not to wake up this morning with a mouse running up the wall of my room - aaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh. I was out of there. Had actually planned to be anyway, but it was a good reason to move very fast out of the building. Yuk. It was in the middle of Chinatown which, like Little India in Singapore, was interesting and had loads of good cheap places to eat and plenty of character. Perhaps I'd choose a different hostel if I went back!
I spent a day wondering around KL. I went up the sky tower, up to the bridge of the Petronus twin towers which I think are the tallest in the world, wondered around the markets and went shopping in the golden triangle (triangle full of shopping malls and hotels).
Last night I went to a classical concert in the concert hall in the twin towers. I don't suppose many backpackers can say they've done that! Nice bit of Mozart in Kuala Lumpa - how random. The hall's design was based on the "great concert halls of europe". I was v pleased with myself for buying a ticket to something really different to the normal backpacker activities. Then I looked on the ticket and it said "Dress code: formal evening wear". So I opened my backpack and perused the contents for something that might pass as evening wear. hmmm. After not very much deliberation, as there isn't much choice from the contents of my backpack, off I went wearing my brand new 3 pounds very comfortable (you pay for comfort) sandals, and the most posh clothes and accessories my backpack had to offer. Luckily they took pity on me and let me in even though I was the only one not wearing a suit or dress. It was a delightful way to spend the evening and a change from just drinking beer.
Today I have travelled to Georgetown in Penang. Getting the bus from KL was absolute chaos. There were about 3 million people, 10 buses when there should have been one, none when there should have been 4, you had no idea which bus to get on or whether to believe the bloke who told you it was the 3rd one on the left or not. But somewhere in this ridiculously hot chaos there is some sort of system as I ended up in my allocated seat chatting to a local and got to Penang more or less on time with my luggage intact and no mice to be seen anywhere. Georgetown is erm, interesting. Lots of nice temples and stuff but not a lot else and its not the nicest place I've been. Its supposed to be the food mecca of Malaysia though so I'm off to find me some good food. I'll probably head to a different place on the island tomorrow to try to get out of the city smog then head to another island - Langkawi.
Over and out for now.
Lots of love
