Wed 28th Bombay (Mumbai)..........Bombay, a city of contrasts! We took a bus tour to 4 very different kinds of temples, which were located far from each other, so we saw a lot of the city also.Ones first impression is of overcrowding. There are 16,600000 inhabitants and it seemed that they were all out on the streets with us. Either walking, riding motor scooters, or in one of the 15000 taxicabs. All these, interspersed with an occasional sacred cow! I would just love to see some of those wandering on Route 19 at home. The temples were impressive, kind of. One problem was, one had to climb lots of steps in a 90 degree temperature,108 in one case, then shoes had to be removed to walk on a dirty wet floor inside. I ruined a new pair of socks in the process. But it was a lot of fun, and quite interesting. In the city centre there are some magnificent old buildings which are great examples of Gothic architecture. These were built in the days of the British Raj, but are now mostly government offices, except for Victoria Terminus, which is still a main line railway station. This contrasts greatly with some areas of roadside slum dwellers, and lot of beggars, mostly little children carrying their baby brother or sister whilstasking for money. All in all, an interesting day. Prices are very low, but you do have to bargain as, initially, they ask for about twice what they expect to get. Back on board in the evening a troupe of Indian dancers put on a magnificent show, before we set sail for three days at sea before arriving at Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean.
