Final post from Vietnam! I'm currently in Saigon, but need to do some recapping first...
I had a terrific few days in Dalat up in the mountains in the central highlands. There's a famous group of older guys called the 'Easy Riders' who drive travellers off the beaten track into the highlands. I met one called Rene and he drove me through the mountains to pagodas, waterfalls, coffee plantations, giant buddhas, even a silk worm factory. He knew his stuff and was another terrific guide, there's no better way to see the countryside than on the back of a bike. He even had an emergency poncho when the rain rolled in...
Next stop was Mui Ne, a gorgeous 11km stretch of beach and it was far better than Nha Trang. I had a bungalow on the beach and a pool (although not much use when you've the sea right infront of you!) all for about 3 quid. There were some stunning sand dunes on the outskirts of town and I tried my hand at sand boarding. A good laugh, but negotiating with merciless ten year olds who won't honour the deal and then cry when you won't pay them more is a bit knackering!
I arrived in Saigon a few days ago and it is insane. It lacks Hanoi's charm, but there's still plenty to do. The traffic is now on another level, I've started saying a small prayer before crossing some intersections. The War Remnants Museum is excellent, with some incredible photograph exhibitions. This morning I headed out to the Cu Chi Tunnels where you can head underground into the network of tunnels used by the Vietcong. Not for the faint hearted! For the first time being short is an advantage, but the claustraphobia still sets in... I'll be in Hong Kong in under 3 weeks and promise I will upload three months worth of photos.
So I'll be leaving Vietnam tomorrow or the day after. Its been my favourite country so far, there's plenty of chaos, it's rough and ready and the food is delicious. The highlight is all the random things you see tied to the back of motorbikes. The runaway winner is an entire dead cow strapped to the back of a small motorbike outside of Hue.
I'll be heading to Cambodia (Phnom Penh) probably tomorrow by bus. I've only a fortnight there so I'll have to pack it all in!
Look after yourselves,
Lerve Jonny
