Sua S'dei (Hello) from Sihnoukville (or Sin City as it's also known)
Arrived here around mid day after leaving Kampot at the back of 8. Were dropped off outside a few hotels which were in our Lonely Planet Guide. After looking at a few of them found a nice hotel for cheap that has a swimming pool.
We dumped our bags and headed to check out the nearby beach. We took a stroll along the water where we were stopped by a little kid asking for Jonny to join in on their beach football game. Jonny joined in and met Ben, a Swiss Guy we were on a tour with in Halong Bay in Vietnam (Small World). Brishay sat and watched but was bombarded with girls trying to sell her bracelets lol!
After the game finished we headed back to our hotel to chill out at the pool the remainder of the day. Around 5pm we ventured out to a nearby hilltop temple, we read had good views of the city, especially at sunset. We paid a local moto-taxi to take us there and back for $4. We got talking to him and found out his name was Poe and he was quite a character. He was 23 years old and had a girlfriend, when Jonny asked her name he said "ahhh, I forget" haha, must be a serious relationship. After just watching the new Kung Fu Panda film (incase any of you don't know, the panda's name is Poe also) Jonny tried to explain this to Poe. Poe didn't even know what a Panda Bear was and when Jonny said bear he though he said beer.....as you can imagine this turned into a very long and confusing conversation that ended in us all being in hysterics laughing. Really nice guy who we hired to take us to the nearby waterfall the following day.
That night we went back to the beachfront for a BBQ tea. J had ribs and B had chicken, another great meal. We went off in search of the nightlife (which we heard was quite good). We had a couple of drinks in a few of the bars and met some new faces but just had an easy night, being back home by 3am haha.
We woke the following morning and met Poe for our trip to the waterfall, he was waiting eagerly outside our hotel for us. It was a 17km journey and with the 3 of us on one bike it was quite uncomfortable but we managed. The waterfall was really good to see, it wasn't as big as other ones we had seen but still pretty impressive. Again we had a great laugh with Poe, he was loving Jonny's singing and dancing like Michael Jackson haha. Think he thought J was a bit crazy lol. We arrived back at our hotel safely and Poe invited us to play Volleyball with him at 4pm, which Jonny was delighted about.
There was a nearby children's charity that sold lots of painting that the kids had drawn, we had heard it was really good so we went to take a look. We bought one that was $3 but when we heard that half the money went to the child and the other half went to the charity we decided to donate $10, so the child got half and the charity. We got a really cute painting of the Cambodian countryside. On the way back we booked our boat to Koh Rong Island (Monkey Island) for the following day and then Jonny met with Poe and set off to play Volleyball while Brishay chilled out at the poolside. Jonny returned a bit sooner than expected after playing a very short game of volleyball. That night we chilled out at the beachside, having another great meal. A thunderstorm hit as we were in the restaurant and it was soon filled with little kids that were wondering the streets selling things, trying to take shelter from the rain. It was really heartbreaking to watch, there was one little girl no older than 2 with nothing but a tank top on, soaking wet and shivering we both wanted to take her home with us. There are so many poor kids here, not begging but just standing looking helpless, we have been really overwhelmed by it all so far, didn't quite expect it to be this bad.
The following morning we set off to catch our ferry to Koh Rong Island, after about 2 hours we arrived to.......pouring rain, what else. It seems eveytime we arrive on an island it rains. We checked into our little bamboo hut and the rain came to a stop so we took a nice walk along the beach. It really was beautiful, white sand and clear water but it wasn't long before the rain was back on again, so we decided to watch a film and hope for it to stop so we could go out and get some food. At night the rain was still drizzling but we set off to a resort just down the beach to get some food. B wasn't keen as we had to walk in the dark with our torches through a forest area where she was petrified of snakes and spiders thinking they were going to bite her. We had a nice meal and a few drinks, it was a very chilled out island with not much happening at all. On our walk back along the beach we came across rather large paw like prints in the sand, that was B scared stiff. Jonny was very re-assuring by saying "its probably just a panther or leopard". We arrived back in our bamboo hut, snake, spider and panther free. It wasn't long before a massive thunderstorm broke out, the rain was so loud it was impossible to sleep. The really loud frogs outside didn't help. So it was a very restless night and we both remembered that we are not the outdoor type. We caught the ferry back to mainland at 10am and checked back into our nice hotel with the pool, ahhh comforts again. The island was nice to see, but maybe a day trip would have suited us better.
The weather still wasn't up to much when we arrived on mainland, so we just chilled out. Had yet another superb meal at the beachfront where Jonny had a tuna steak and really liked it, B tried to share it with him but was almost sick at the taste....the fish eating is not going so great for her.
We have our bus booked for Phom Phen (the capital of Cambodia) early tomorrow morning. We have heard some mixed reviews about PP, so have to wait and see what we think of it. Cambodia is getting off to a great start, the people are unbelievable friendly here, so interested in speaking to you and just finding out where you are from. We are both feeling quite taken back by the amount of homeless kids, which we are sure is only to get worse in places like Phom Phen, so we are looking forward to finding out more information about helping at some orphanages and hope we can give a little.
Until Phom Phen......
