The purpose of our visit to Datong is twofold: first, it's an obvious stopover on our way to Beijing; second, to visit the Yungang Caves.
We didn't expect much from this place but we were pleasantly surprised. The place seems to have a bit more room to breathe, the air is a bit cleaner, the people seem very friendly and more laid back. The sun is shining and we've checked into a nice 4 star hotel.
The Yungang caves are a real wonder. An absolute must-see! The Lonely Planet said "prepare to be gobsmacked" ...and we were. There are over 50 caves, and each one contains intricate carvings, done around AD 450 - 550 (approx). Some of the carvings are small, some are huge, over 17 metres high. Some have eroded over time, some are in pristine condition. It is the most impressive sight I have ever seen. I doubt my iPod photos will do them justice. The best two caves were breathtaking but unfortunately no photos were permitted there. There were amazing carvings, sculptures and frescoes, full of original colour.
We were constantly looking upwards to see the tops of the carvings and the intricately carved ceilings - today as we sit on the train to Beijing, we can both feel our necks aching!
